Sokol SF Newsletter - March 2021
|
|
Dear Friends of Sokol,
It is hard to believe that just one year ago, on March 8, 2020, Sokol SF organized its last two in-person events; a morning walk to T.G. Masaryk´s bust in Golden Gate Park in SF and an evening violin concert by Ambroš Duo.
Sokol SF unit continues in its activities, despite various Covid-19 related restrictions.
We are looking forward to a special treat on March 11th – a virtual introduction, meeting, and conversation with the new Consul General of the Czech Republic in Los Angeles, Amb. Jaroslav Olsa, Jr.
During March, we will continue with our Zoom exercises every Sunday afternoon available to our members only, and enjoy a hike on the SF Peninsula, on Saturday, March 20th. An Egg decoration class will be held at the end of March just in time for Easter.
You are welcome to our events, we look forward to seeing you.
Wishing everyone to stay safe, healthy, and positive!
Jara Dusatko, President Sokol SF

The former world and republic chief of Sokol, Jarina Žitná, died on Wednesday, February 17th, 2021 at the age of 88. "Until the last moment she was active. She deserves a huge thank you from all of us," stated the mayor of TJ SOKOL Liberec, Jaroslav Postl. Jarina was a legend among the Sokols, she is also a winner of the Liberec Region's personality.
Jarina was born on January 20, 1933, in Prague and lived in Liberec as of 1945. She grew up in a Sokol family and worked as a Sokol trainer since the age of 15. She was very actively involved in the restoration of Sokol in 1968. In 1989, she participated in the reconstruction of the gym unions of Sokol District of Ještědské.
In January 1991, she was elected chief of the Czech Sokol Community (= ČOS Česká Obec Sokolská) in Prague. At the same time she performed the function of the chief of the World Sokol Union. She personally drove three Všesokolské slety in Prague in 1994, 2000 and 2006. She also received the title of the Master Class for her sporting performance in tourism. She also participated in several foreign mini expeditions in Iceland, Spitzberky and Greenland, which she mostly prepared and led. From the year 2010 she published, "Sokolské souzvuky".
About the current situation she wrote: "When it is over, it will be difficult to cope with it and we will have our hands and brains full of work so that we can compensate for all the damage again. But man is endowed with reason and will. It will work and it must work!" she wrote in her text.
