Dear Friends of Sokol SF,
Welcome to our May Newsletter!
In May, as spring brings us re-birth in nature, we too, are looking forward to gradual opening and return to normalcy in our lives.
I encourage you to visit our Sokol SF website where you can see our past events, such as the fun hike around Lake Merritt in Oakland, and a new Zoom session of our popular Czech Cooking Class, can find the link in this Newsletter too. The website also includes a calendar listing our future activities.
In May, Czechs remember several historical anniversaries – especially the end of World War II, on May 9th.
Wishing you all the best and looking forward to meeting you in person soon!
Nazdar!

Did you know Chicago had a
Czech mayor 90 years ago ?
|
|
Few Czechs left such an imprint on the world like Anton Jospeh Cermak (Antonín Čermák). The life of the brave mayor, who saved Roosvelt and was not afraid of Al Capone, is the story of the American dream.

Prague Spring
76th International Music Festival
May 12 - June 6, 2021
|
|
The Prague Spring International Music Festival has announced its revised program for the 76th edition of the event, which will take place between 12 May and 3 June. “We have put together twenty-two concerts which, to the utmost extent, fulfill the expectations of our festival audiences – performances from first-rate artists on the domestic and international music scenes, guest appearances from foreign orchestras and ensembles, and the showcasing of young talents. In a situation where cultural life has essentially come to a standstill in the Czech Republic and beyond its borders, we regard this program as healthily audacious,” states festival Director Roman Bělor.
Four concerts of the Prague Spring international music festival, including the opening concert on May 12 and the closing concert on June 3 in the Rudolfinum hall, will be performed before reduced-capacity audiences, which must undergo PCR tests for coronavirus.
The concerts are being held within the framework of a pilot project commissioned by the Ministry of Culture to resume events as the Covid-19 infection rate continues to drop. The same goes for a May 10 concert by the Czech Philharmonic Orchestra.
A little over 20 concerts are on the program for this year’s edition of the Prague Spring. All of them can be followed for free by streaming on the festival website. Some concerts will also be broadcast by Czech Radio.

Do you know when your "svátek" is?
|
|
Discover over 365 Czech names that are part of the Czech calendar!
In the Czech Republic, every day of the year is someone's Name Day ("svátek" or "jmeniny" in Czech - the latter is more formal). It is a reason to celebrate, wish the person a Happy Name Day, and buy a little present, like flowers and a box of chocolates. Remember: Never give anyone an even number of flowers (2, 4, 6...). Such bouquets are used at funerals. The number should be odd (1, 3, 5...).
Find out if your name has an equivalent in Czech and what its diminutive version would be. Learn on which days your friends' or family members' names fall and how to wish them a Happy Name Day in Czech!

If you miss hearing Czech language, you might want to get some audio books in Czech. The company is able to receive payments from abroad and you can listen to your favorite book.

55th year of Praha - Prčice March
Pochod Praha - Prčice
|
|
The Prague - Prčice March is the most famous organized tourist and long-distance march in the Czech Republic . On its foundation in 1966 participated Jiri Dvorak , chief editor of Tourism , and Ing. Karel Kulle with a local native and sports promoter Stanislav Rataj . The route was allegedly inspired by Mrs. Běla Dvořáková, who said to the founders of the march, looking in vain for an attractive destination about 70 kilometers from Prague, so that the route can be missed in daylight: "It's time for lunch, go to Prčice with it!" [1 ] The march usually takes place on the 3rd Saturday in May. It is postponed due to Covid to June 13th 2021
