Sokol SF Newsletter - June 2021

|
Dear Friends of Sokol SF,
After a year-and-a-half of isolation and lockdown we are emerging into joy and comfort?
We are so excited about the gradual return to our regular activities!
Our board has worked hard to carefully plan new, varied activities for this summer and the rest of the year. We are glad to collaborate on some events with the Czech School of California.
Please check our calendar and find an event that may interest you – it may be a virtual puppet show, hikes in the beautiful Bay Area, a fun winery visit, a picnic by Lake Chabot, or our inspiring cooking demonstration. In October, we plan to participate in "Sokolský Běh Republiky", a renewed tradition as a celebration of the establishment of the republic by a movement, organized by the ČOS (Česká Obec Sokolská). All age categories are invited.
We are looking forward to meeting you at our events and wishing you a joyful and safe start of the new era!
Nazdar!
Jara Dusatko, President Sokol SF

Mother's Day Weekend Candlestick Clean-Up
|
|
|
On Mother's Day weekend, 15 dedicated Sokol SF members and one friend of Sokol helped to clean Candlestick Park by removing invasive plants and collecting several bags of trash, all while having a nice time on a sunny beach.
They removed over 22,000 Gazania,
Italian Thistle, mustard, English Plantain, and other invasive plants at Last Port. They also had the opportunity to help our community and saw multiple interesting animals at the same time, like: the Northern Alligator Lizard (adult and juvenile, rare, but be careful they bite), Western Fence Lizard, Stink Beetle, Predacious Rove Beetle, Mourning Dove, Western Gull, California Gull, and
the Lesser Scaup (female).
James Aliberti (a State Park Interpreter) nicely described all the observed species and explained how they fit into the
local ecosystem.
Sokol SF is planning to organize similar activities in the future. The next one might be helping at the Angel Island park - stay tuned for more details.
And we will certainly return to Candlestick Point, as James Aliberti was very thankful for our help and invited us to come even every month😉.

Pillar Point Bluff Trail Hike
|
|
New friendships were forged as six adults, three kids and two dogs hiked a new trail together at Pillar Point Bluff on
Sunday, May 16th.
Beautiful ocean views were visible each step of the way. And even through the weather was on the cooler side, we were prepared and hiked about four miles
at a good brisk pace.
Thank you, Petre, for bringing us here!

Missing our Czech Heritage Nights

|
As we reminisce about our past Czech Heritage Nights with the San Jose Sharks, we are not alone as we look forward to the days we can gather at games again and
meet with our favorite Czech hockey players.
Below you'll find a message from Shark Tomas Hertl who shares our sentiment:

Zapomenuty Cech z Hollywoodu
|
|
|
As Ambassador Jaroslav Olsa, the newly appointed Consul General of the Czech Republic in Los Angeles, settled into life in Southern California, he wasted no time in learning more about his surrounding and specifically about Czechs who have played a part in the movie industry in Hollywood.
In the article below, written by Amb. Olsa, learn about Emil Kosa, a forgotten Czech of Hollywood.

Právě vyšla v Čechách nová česká autobiografická kniha
KÁMEN A ŽIVOT s podtitulkem
Hrst vzpomínek ze života
českého geologa ve světě.

Právě vyšla v Česku nová česká autobiografická kniha KÁMEN A ŽIVOT
Při svých pracovních a přednáškových cestách kromě odborných záležitostí si autor všímal i sociálně-politických, kulturních a společenských zvláštností různých zemí a našel si místní přátele, kteří mu pomohli pochopit dění v těchto zemích.
Čeští čtenáři, kteří knihu už přečetli, oceňují její obsah i vnější úpravu.
