February 3rd marked the 100th Day of school which we celebrated with much pride. Our students have done very well continuing to learn during the pandemic. We appreciate our teachers and families who have been consistent in following our expectations with our students. The consistency has paid off and we will continue to do so for the remainder of the school year. As always, thank you for your support and enjoy this issue!
El 3rd de febrero marcó el día 100th de la escuela que celebramos con mucho orgullo. Nuestros estudiantes han hecho muy bien para seguir aprendiendo durante la pandemia. Apreciamos a nuestros maestros y familias que han sido consistentes en seguir nuestras expectativas con nuestros estudiantes. Both in December and January the 1st grade class were thrilled to have guest speakers who shared their winter holiday celebrations. The class learned about the food, customs, and activities for the following holidays: Diwali, Hanukkah, St. Lucia's Day, Las Posadas, Kwanzaa, and Oshogatsu (Japanese New Year) through storysigning, presentations and hands-on activities. |

The second-grade class had both Social Studies and Science units overlap on Geographical features. We had the opportunity to explore with volcanic type rocks (Basalt, Tuff and Scoria). We also investigated various 3D maps of geographical features combined with Google Maps across the United States (Appalachian Mountains, Rocky Mountains, Death Valley and Monterey Bay to name a few). We also learned about water/landforms such as mountain, valley, plain, lake, river, ocean, desert and island. |

Tuvimos la oportunidad de explorar con rocas de tipo volcánico (Basalt, Tuff y scoria). In math we are learning about multiplication and division. It is a good challenge for us! In science we learned how to engineer carts that could move. We also learned about motion, wheels, and axles. We became experts on using Zoom and Google. We went on a field trip to Reinhardt Redwoods Regional Park. (see picture above) We hiked on a trail through the redwoods and saw a creek along the trail. It was a lot of fun! In social studies we are learning about geography and how to read maps. We are creating our own ASL “Three Little Pigs” stories. by 3rd Graders

The 3rd grade AC class did many different activities during their special events and field trips. They cooked Indian fried bread and gingerbread. They went outside to see nature, trees, and animals. They went ice skating at a rink in Fremont. Through these experiences, students used their senses of smell, taste, touch, and sight. As a result, their language skills are improving as they have something to talk about. Here are the comments from 3rd-grade students.
“Oh, the day we went to Coyote Hills, an insect surprised you.”
“ASL teacher and I cooked. We learned that gingerbread requires many spices!”
“I want to eat Indian fried bread again!”
“It was very cold when we went to Redwood Park!’”
The class is excited to get more experiences and create wonderful memories.

La clase AC de 3rd grados hizo muchas actividades diferentes durante sus eventos especiales y excursiones. Cocinaron pan frito indio y pan de jengibre. Ellos salieron a ver la naturaleza, los árboles y los animales. Se patinaron en una pista de patinaje en Fremont. A través de estas experiencias, los estudiantes usaron sus sentidos del olfato, gusto, tacto y vista. Our students are very excited to participate in two different competitions: Gallaudet University Youth Program's National Literacy Competition (NLC) for 2nd grade through 5th grade) and the Youth De'VIA Competition 2D and 3D artwork projects (Kindergarten to 5th grade). We decided to let our students chose their favorite SuperHero in honor of Lauren Ridloff who starred in the recent released movie, Eternals. The students did a Collage project and they will submit their work by March 1st. Now our students are working on several videos for N.L. Competition. Here are some glimpses of our work. |

Nuestros estudiantes están muy emocionados de participar en dos competiciones diferentes: La Competencia Nacional de Alfabetización (NLC) del Programa Juvenil de la Universidad Gallaudet para grados del 2nd al 5th) y la Competencia Juvenil De'VIA 2D y 3D proyectos de arte (Kindergarten al 5th grado). In December, the 4th grade students gave their Holiday Presentations. Each student read about and researched a different holiday from around the world. They spent three weeks reading, discussing, and researching their holiday. At home, they worked hard creating and gathering visual aids to support their presentation. When their presentations were completed, the class celebrated with a Holiday Party right before the Winter Break!

Our students are learning how to write simple sentences during our BLA time. Soon, they will be creating their narrative stories.
In Science, students are learning about magnets. They get to explore using different magnetic tools. Once they understand how magnets work, they will learn about energy and how energy works in our environment.

Our 4th grade students are working on their presentation on one city in California. They learned about why and how people migrated to California. The students developed some questions to interview their families about their history and how they got to California. The students also are working on their family tree to understand the connections within their families. |

After winter break, the 5th grade class reflected on their last few weeks of 2021 and thought about their goals for 2022. Students participated in an activity in which they wrote about their New Year's resolution, something new they'd like to try in 2022 and their favorite part of 2021. A picture of them was then added to complete the activity. Our class is very excited for what 2022 will bring! |

What we are doing in 5th grade is learning how to be organized and make sure everything works out perfectly for 6th grade. We can't expect a field trip right now, so we have to wait. In every grade, we have fun activities and projects. This is what we’ve been learning.

On the first day of school, I was very shy! From September to January, I stopped being shy and got more confident in myself. Back then, I didn't like doing homework, but now I'm more motivated to do my homework because I want to feel ready for middle school!!

Given the large number of PAC members this year, principals Joey Baer and Ryan Souza agreed to alter the structure by splitting into 4 committee groups: 1) Fundraising 2) End of the Year Trip 3) T-Shirt Design and 4) Elementary Issues. However, all committee groups do have opportunity to be involved with other committees. For example: Bake Sale committee will solicit for ideas and make final decision on what we will sell. Then all PAC members will help with the sales.
Each committee will meet one-two times a month and entire PAC members will meet once a month. We kicked off first meeting with activities to trust each other. We look forward to doing more after the Omicron cools down.

Native American Heritage:
We invited Sarah Young Bear Brown to our assembly. She shared her experience as a Native American and how she fought for her rights since she was little girl. She explained that her work is not done until we are actually treated equally. At end, our students asked excellent questions.

2nd Grade class held an assembly on December 10th to present about Universal Rights. First, each class watched "For Every Child, A Better World" video (click on picture). After watching the video, each class had an opportunity to:
- Draw a picture what universal right they feel is essential, what they could do to make things right and equal for everyone?

Do video recording of Handshapes/1-5 or other ASL expression regarding universal rights
- Read another book with universal rights together (see additional reading link)

Explore Google Image searches of injustice with human rights and discuss (examples)
- Black Lives Matter
- Flint water crisis
- Syria (Or any other country) immigrants/migrants
- Israel/Palestine conflict
- Border crisis at Mexico/Texas (caged children)
