Dear Osprey Students and Families,
We are pleased to present the 2021-22 AHS Course Catalog, which includes descriptions of the wide-ranging, exciting array of electives we plan to offer next year alongside important information about AHS graduation requirements and academic policies. As we near the end of the school year, it's time for students to consider what classes they would like to take next year at AHS. Please dive into the catalog together to begin considering elective choices for 2021-22. You can also find the Course Catalog on the AHS website under “Our Families.”
When choosing electives, it’s important to consider several factors including interests, career and college goals and path to graduation. We have provided academic advising to 9th,10th and 11th grades students during their in-person days this spring. We want to encourage you to have conversations at home about elective choices as well. Our college counselor, Jess Morrison, has created this helpful Guide to Course Selection and College Readiness. Please review Jess' slideshow together to learn more about what colleges look for in terms of course selection in their admissions processes.
We also encourage families to attend Jess’ College Nights to learn more:
- Rising Senior College Prep Night, Wednesday, April 28 (11th grade families)
- Freshman Parent Career and College Information Night, Wednesday, May 5 (9th grade families)
Students who have received a failing grade in any class during their high school career may need to recover specific academic credits through electives or summer school in order to stay on track for an on-time graduation. For example, if a student has failed a semester of Humanities, they will need to make up a Language Arts credit and a Social Studies credit, both which can be done through elective choices provided there is room in their schedule, or through an online course through our summer school program.
We counsel students if they are behind on credits and families can also review transcripts at any time in Infinite Campus. Our credit review worksheet can be a useful tool when reviewing progress towards an AHS diploma.
We will contact individual students and families in May if we are recommending summer school. If you think summer school may be a good choice for you but do not receive an email recommending it, please reach out directly to our Summer School Coordinator Carlin Nielsen at carlin.nielsen@animashighschool.com.
Next week, we will send out step-by-step instructions for completing course requests, along with the Elective Schedule, which shows when each elective will be offered. Returning students will be able to use Infinite Campus to make course requests for 2021-22 anytime between Thursday April 22 and May 7 using the IC Course Request process. Please wait to receive the Elective Schedule before deciding on classes, as some electives will be offered at the same time or during core classes.
We will provide support for students as they complete Course Requests during in-person days over the next two weeks. Jess and Dusty will meet with juniors next Thursday, April 22, before they leave for LINK Internships, and we will work with 9th and 10th graders the following week.
Because we give priority to older students and those who need specific classes to meet graduation requirements and we strive to keep class sizes small, students may not always get their first choices for electives. We will do our best to accommodate requests when creating student schedules. Be sure to have alternate choices in mind when requesting courses.
We hope to have 2021-22 student schedules finalized by early June and students and families will be able to view them in Infinite Campus. While we do not anticipate major changes to our course offerings between now and the fall, it is possible that some electives will be added or dropped. If this happens, we’ll work with students individually to make changes to schedules. There will also be an opportunity to make schedule changes during the first two weeks of each semester, using our Add/Drop process.
Please don’t hesitate to reach out if you have any questions.
