2021-22 COVID Update

NAIA Members,

The old adage “no news is good news” still applies to the NAIA’s planning for 2021-22. As previously shared, conferences and institutions will have authority over any COVID requirements pertaining to regular season play and that is still the case.

With the rise in positivity rates across the country, we are closely tracking data to help us assess whether COVID testing will be required at 2021-22 championships. At this time, we have not made the determination to require pre-travel or onsite COVID testing protocols. However, we are still three months away and the COVID landscape continues to change quickly. We cannot in good conscious make a final testing decision at this time. If we do opt to require COVID testing for championship play, we will let you know as soon as possible so your institution can plan accordingly.

To assist us with these decisions, the NAIA is reconvening our Medical Advisory Panel (MAP), which is made up of medical professionals with expertise in both the areas of athletics and infectious diseases. The MAP was instrumental in helping guide us through the 2020-21 championships and I am grateful they are all willing to continue serving in this capacity.

As the uncertainty around COVID continues, my goal is to provide as much transparency as possible to you about the decision-making process. So even though there is no significant news to share today, know that the national office and appropriate governance groups are meeting regularly and continuing to monitor data that would initiate a change in plans.

Thank you for your continued patience and please send any COVID-related questions to [email protected].

All the best,

Jim Carr
