Don't Worry, Be Happy!
All 289 students at Pearson Elementary learned to play the ukulele last year, thanks to a foundation grant. Strumming songs like "Don't Worry, Be Happy" and "Good to Be Alive" kept Tamera Rabura's classes engaging and joyful. Said one young musician: "Thank you for providing money for ukuleles because the songs we play sound very nice."
Sunshine in Their Cups
Viking Espresso has been serving hot drinks to North Kitsap High School students and staff for 25 years. In 2018-19, a Foundation grant rebuilt the coffee cart. Last year, we replaced the coffee grinder. While the stand's purpose is to teach students practical skills, teacher Becky Calder said participants most enjoyed contributing to a positive school culture by "spreading a little sunshine."
Wobble Seats Aid Focus
A Foundation grant furnished every Vinland Elementary classroom with wobble seats in 2021-22. The seats have a funny name, but their purpose is serious. Teachers report that students who use the seats find it easier to focus and stay on task. Flexible seating options help students pay attention to how their bodies react to different conditions and help them learn to self-regulate.
