APPLICATIONS OPEN FOR 2021 DELAYED WHEAT HARVEST INCENTIVE PROGRAM
California Waterfowl is now accepting applications for the 2021 Delayed Wheat Harvest Incentive Program. This program provides incentives for farmers to delay the harvest of winter wheat and other small grains to give wild duck nests in their fields time to hatch before harvest.

The 2020 pilot program was extremely successful, attracting strong interest from farmers and proving to be to be a cost-effective way to mitigate agriculture-wildlife conflict, with minimal disturbance to both wildlife and crops.

Incentives of $30 to $40 per acre to delay wheat and/or triticale harvest until July 1-15 offset costs associated with delaying harvest.

ANOTHER DISPATCH FROM THE VETERAN HUNT PROGRAM
When Steve Plotner got the call for the CWA Veteran Hunt at Denverton earlier this month, he figured things were looking up. Being in the Coast Guard can be demanding but Steve was looking forward to a day in the marsh.

Of course, it didn’t take long for “Murphy” to enter – if things can go wrong, they will, so of course Steve got the call to head out. Duty calls!

DEADLINE APPROACHING FOR POST-SEASON YOUTH, VETERAN AND GOOSE HUNTS IN HUNT PROGRAM

The post-season youth hunts, veteran hunts and goose hunts are about a month away! All zones except for the Northeastern Zone will have special youth hunts on Feb. 6-7 (hunters must be age 17 or younger and accompanied by a non-hunting adult), and veteran hunts Feb. 13-14. And we have some late goose hunts on February 20. We've got a bunch of special hunts on exclusive lands all over the state, including Bird Haven Ranch, Grizzly Ranch, Butte Creek Island Ranch, Sanborn Slough and more!

The deadline to apply for youth hunts, veteran hunts and goose hunts is THIS Saturday, Jan. 16.

Send your photos and a brief description of your hunt to our magazine editor and you might see them in an upcoming issue of California Waterfowl!

The duck and goose seasons both end on the same day this year (Jan. 31) but there are still a myriad of season closing dates, late season opening dates AND the new Veteran Hunt Days.
