Fall, 2021
Greetings!

A-B Tech students, faculty and staff returned to campus at the end of August. Just like many of you, much of the A-B Tech community has not had the pleasure of meeting our new President, Dr. John Gossett. He is just as eager to get to know our thoughtful and generous supporters!

We are thrilled to feature new and longtime Foundation donors in this semester's e-news. Carl and Marie Cochrane are some of our longstanding donors who have supported the College for over 20 years. We are also happy to introduce a new donor and A-B Tech alum, Colleen Webster, who generously started a new scholarship supporting Cosmetology students just a few weeks ago.

Please save the date(s) for Autumn in Asheville on October 7th and 14th. This year's event will look a little different to keep our community as safe as possible, but will include delicious and innovative food from our Chefs and students. More details can be found below. We hope you will join us and help us support the A-B Tech Foundation as well as the Culinary and Hospitality Department.

Sincerely,

Amanda Edwards

Return of the Runway 5k!
The Runway 5k is returning to the Asheville Airport to celebrate its 60th anniversary. The "flattest 5K in the mountains" will be held on the west side of the airfield on Saturday, October 9 at 2 p.m. We are thrilled that proceeds from this event will go to the A-B Tech Aviation Fund Scholarship!

"Supporting aviation education is important to us, and western North Carolina is fortunate to have a local aviation management program at A-B Tech, as well as a flight school. Both scholarship funds will assist local students who are interested in pursuing careers in this exciting industry," Lew Bleiweis, Executive Director of the Asheville Airport, told WLOS.

Donor Spotlight
Carl and Marie Cochrane
Carl and Marie Cochrane are some of the Foundation's longest standing donors. The couple established the Marie and Carl L. Cochrane Endowed Scholarship in 1999. The couple's relationship with the College began in the 1970's when Marie started working part-time at the College. She went on to become a full-time Math instructor in 1989. Carl also taught at the College in the evenings from 1977-1989, and then began working as a Math adjunct instructor in 1989. Both retired from A-B Tech in 2000 and remain dedicated friends of the College.

During her time at A-B Tech, Marie had a passion for not only teaching students, but saw the many hardships that students endured while going to school and working. Many were often having problems when it came time to pay for tuition and books. This led her to the decision to establish a scholarship once she retired.

“Education is important. There are people trying to go to school and they need just a little bit of help," says Carl.

To date, the Foundation has awarded over $14,000 to deserving students from the Marie and Carl L. Endowed scholarship since its inception.
New Scholarship Spotlight
Colleen Webster
We are so excited to spotlight a new Cosmetology Program scholarship created by A-B Tech alum Colleen Webster, the Webster Scholarship Award. We are always thrilled when A-B Tech alumni reach out to us to support our current and future students.

Colleen writes, "As an alumni of the A-B Tech College Cosmetology Program, it is my wish to give back and help in areas that have helped me achieve my goals. Reaching one's full potential and pursuing dreams has been a common theme and priority in my life. A-B Tech has provided me with a great education and training in which to build a successful career. It is my dream to inspire and support others in their own success. Education helps those wanting to help themselves by allowing a pathway. Access to education and training supports individuals, creates stability and ultimately builds a stronger community."

Thank you Colleen for your support of A-B Tech and our future Cosmetology students!
Thank you Bank of America
The Foundation is excited to continue our partnership with Bank of America to expand the college’s Skills Training Employment Program (STEP), which aims to offer clearly defined career pathways and job placement to low-to moderate-income individuals.

STEP provides Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program participants access to curriculum and programming, which includes occupational skills training, English-language education, basic literacy instruction and academic courses necessary to towards earning a two-year associates degree. The program provides individual case management services to prepare those potential workers to fill specific local hiring needs and worker shortages in Western North Carolina.

Bank of America’s $50,000 investment both provides direct support for STEP program participants and aligns with the company’s commitment to advance economic mobility and racial equality by helping to address issues facing women and communities of color. More than half of STEP participants are racial or ethnic minorities and the vast majority, 89%, are women.
