DREAMING OF SUMMER WITH SCOPE IN DECEMBER
Over the course of 2021, you've been with us as we shed a spotlight on 100 individuals, teens, businesses, camps, young professionals, partners, and SCOPE board members who continue to positively impact our ongoing growth.

As we head into our 30th summer of providing SCOPE camperships to our country's most vulnerable youth, it is because of you, our loyal SCOPE supporters, who continue to give SCOPE the ability to change the trajectory of the lives of the children and families we help to serve. THANK YOU!

We finish these features on a high note, with the person it all began with
as we head into 2022, together!
JAY JACOBS
SCOPE Founder & Board Member
Jay Jacobs, SCOPE Founder and Owner of Timber Lake Family of Camps shares, “SCOPE is the best opportunity I have to take what I value, what I feel is so important, and share it with those who could otherwise not afford it.”

As SCOPE celebrates 30 years of providing camperships for children from the most vulnerable of situations, we are continuously grateful to Jay and his wife Mindy for their commitment to our efforts. Jay served as the former Chair of SCOPE during the early years of our organization as well as continued his motivation to change the trajectory of the lives of the children SCOPE serves, as an active member of the SCOPE Board of Directors and champion of our cause.
In motivation to progress SCOPE's impact, Jay, in memory of his best friend Sandy Lavitt, took the natural next step, spearheading our efforts to provide college scholarships for eligible SCOPE Northeast campership recipients to gain access to college opportunities after 6 or more years attending a SCOPE partner camp. After years of development, SCOPE launched this program in the Fall of 2020 and since that time have provided 13 former SCOPE campership recipients with college scholarships to attend the college or vocational school of their choosing. Through support from Jay and many others SCOPE is preparing to support an additional 12 students in the Fall of 2022 with funding through the Sanford Lavitt Education Fund, to support these campers/students as they move forward in their educational journey.
Jay’s work with SCOPE continues to allow him to bring meaning, sharing and community to the profession and business which has been his life’s work. This is very much apparent in the mission of the TLC STARFISH Foundation, his camp organization's nonprofit which provides underserved children the opportunity to participate in summer camp, education, recreational, and wellness programs that would otherwise not be available to them. As a STARFISH charitable partner, SCOPE campership recipients and the SCOPE community as a whole benefit from the foundation’s commitment to the belief that positive change, both big and small, truly makes a difference. Thank you, Jay, for encouraging us all to do better through our time and our giving.
Camp Wilbur Herrlich, New York
SCOPE Northeast
In 1922, a young boy named Wilbur Herrlich, passed away from appendicitis. Before he died, he wished that his family would donate their farm so that children from New York City could come to the country in the summer to experience nature. Fast forward almost 100 years later, campers at Camp Wilbur Herrlich have many opportunities to make friends, have fun, and develop a sense of cooperation and independence. With staff from around the United States and the world, campers gain a real understanding of all the things they can be and all the places they can go.

“At camp it’s easy to make friends… in the city, not everybody’s like that, not everybody’s friendly. Here, like everybody gets along, and they know how to respect each other.” - Janai
