Ms. Cherella Nicholson

Ms. Nicholson will serve as the Saturday Cultural School Parent Recruiter and Liaison (PRL) to the ministry. In consultation with the Educational Coordinator the PRL will promote the Saturday Cultural School program among African and African American parents/families with elementary school age children in Fresno and the surrounding communities.

Pastor Oputa Reclaims His Name!

Did you ever wonder about the initial “I” in the name of our ministry director and pastor of The Way Christian Fellowship Rev./Dr. Henry I. Oputa. Well there is a story there.

When Rev./Dr. Oputa, was born he was the first surviving son of Chief D.C. and Mrs. Juliana Oputa. Rev./Dr. Oputa himself was fragile at birth.

As is customary in the Igbo and other African cultures, names given to children carries significant meaning. Believing that God would allow this son to not only survive but thrive, he was named Ifeanyi-Chukwu Oputa – “Nothing is Impossible with God”

So…where did “Henry” come from? Coming from a Catholic tradition, it was customary for priests to insist on the children being christened with Anglo names (the issues surrounding that are conversations for another time.) This is how he became known in school and other public arenas as “Henry”.

As many of you know, Rev./Dr. Oputa turned 70 last year. As part of that process, he was led to reclaim his traditional birth name – Ifeanyi-Chukwu H. Oputa (ee-fyne-yay-choo koo). So now you know.
