CBC NEWSLETTER..........JUNE 2021
f2f Games Returning!
July and August will bring the return of most of the CBC's face to face games, some at a new time and also offer online games on BBO.

The Wednesday f2f game will return to its old time slot on July 7th. 0-300 and Open Pairs games will be offered.

The Saturday game will return on July 17 at a new time - 9:30 AM. Try out this morning game - great way to start the day and frees up the afternoon!
(The Birthday Game will be returning, but not until the Board approves outside food. Watch for details later this Fall)

The 0-300 Game with Susan and Laura is returning on August 9 on a new day (Monday) and time (10:00AM)

Join them for a mini lesson, followed by an 18 board game. No partner is needed for this game!
Finally, Mike Bitonti will be returning on August 17 with Supervised Play. This will start at 6:00 PM with a short lesson, followed by play. You do not need a partner for this game. No masterpoints are awarded in this game, but you can ask all the questions you want! This is a new day for this session - Tuesday.

Other games will be joining the schedule in the future, in regular time spots, and also the occasional special game. Team games will be returning as well.

To help with the transition from virtual back to f2f club play, the ACBL has given the f2f clubs additional upgraded games to offer their players thru the end of 2021 and will be decreasing the upgrade for virtual club games from 150% down to 125%.

For now, the CBC plans to offer both f2f and virtual club games and will adjust the schedule in the future as the needs of our members dictate. Come join us on either format - we've saved a seat for you!
NAP Qualifier Games In June - July - August
The North American Pairs (NAP) event at the Spring NABC requires that players qualify in a Club game, either online or f2f.

Players must qualify in Club games, then in the District Finals to go on to NABC play.

Club qualifier games run in the months of June, July and August.

The games are stratified by ACBL directive into 3 strats and players will receive an email from ACBL at the end of each monthly posting cycle confirming their Qualifications.

Along with qualifying for the District NAP Finals, these games give players the opportunity to earn RED and BLACK masterpoints (50/50) at 200% the base level.

Play Along with Jack

by Jack Self
Here is another column directed toward our beginner players. Nearly all “experienced” players will get this right but many beginner players might get it wrong.

You have bid diamonds but your left hand opponent has taken the contract in 4 Spades and your partner is on lead. He leads the 2 and this is what you see and what you hold.

Dummy:          Q 7 5
You         K 10 9 6 3

Declarer places the 5 from the dummy. What do you play and why?

Your correct play is to play the 9 and NOT the K. You know your partner does not have the A. He would NEVER under-lead an Ace against a suit contract (that is a HUGE no-no in the bridge world). So you know declarer has the A and will capture your K making dummy’s Q good. So you play the 9 hoping your partner has the J and declarer will have to win with their A and now your K will live to take a trick.

There are three good points worth thinking about here:
First, remember, your partner is not under-leading the Ace. Like I said, that is one of the prime principles of defending (Never under-lead an Ace).

Second, when your partner leads low, he either has a singleton or he has three of them (he would lead high if he had a doubleton). So the chances are pretty good he has the J.

Third, playing the 9 cannot lose. If declarer does have the J, then you are going to limit declarer to two tricks in diamonds, whereas playing the K will give declarer three tricks.

This is a situation that comes up all the time, so be ready for it and when it does occur, you will make the right play.

See you at the bridge table.
Support the CBC - So Many Ways to Play!!

Daily ACBL - SYC Games

ACBL has partnered with Bridge Base Online (BBO) and The Common Game to give you chances each day to earn black masterpoints online. Additionally, the majority of the game fees you pay will be given to your local club to support them during this difficult time.

Support Your Club ACBL Black Point Games are pair events. Games are held on BBO three times a day:
10:00 am, 5:10 pm and 7:30 pm.
Registration opens two hours before game time. You can play with any other ACBL member who has a BBO account.

NEW! Daylong Tournaments are solo events played with robots. In this game, you have up to 24 hours to complete your game, and it doesn’t have to be played all at once. You can even pause in the middle of a hand.
Play a few of the 18 total boards in the morning, some more after lunch and the rest in the evening. Or, play them all in one sitting! Register anytime, and you’ll have until midnight Eastern time to finish the boards.

Both events use matchpoint scoring, and masterpoints earned in these games will count toward District and Unit races.
99'er Virtual Game - Every Night 7:00 PM

Play with your friends from the CBC, or make some new ones in Districts 9 & 7 & 24 !!
Play 12 relaxed boards at approximately 7½ minutes a board.
This game pays back to the players' home clubs; the CBC will receive $3.00 every time you play in this game. Lesson before the game and Hand Analysis after. Great way to improve your game and support your club!
Southeastern Bridge Club Consortium

The CBC has joined with the Southeast Bridge Club Consortium (based in Knoxville, TN) along with more than 30 regional bridge clubs! The SEBCC Mission is to keep bridge players of all levels engaged and excited about bridge.

SEBCC offers games four times each day: 9:30 AM, 1:00 PM, 4:00 PM, and 7:00 PM. Every session has both Limited and Open games available (Open games are awarded extra Masterpoints when there are also Limited games at the same time).

They also offer free weekly lessons and Live Postmortems.

The best way to understand their offerings is via the SEBCC online schedule
