President's Message
Dear Friends of SEF,
Congratulations to the Del Mar and Gabrielino High School graduating seniors and to all of the fifth and eighth grade students who have been promoted to the next grade, and campuses, of their academic journey. You should all be incredibly proud of your accomplishments. The strength and resilience you have shown over the last year is an inspiration to the entire community. On behalf of the foundation I send you all best wishes for every success now and in the future!
Moving forward, as we officially close out the 2020/21 school year, I wanted to take a moment to say thank you to all of our supporters for the trust you have afforded the foundation and myself personally. The past year has been harder than any of us could have ever imagined and I fully comprehend the difficulties and challenges that we all faced. What I know for sure is that our students, teachers, parents and district team addressed all of the challenges with grace and that we do indeed see rainbows after a storm.
Ultimately as an education foundation we want to ensure our community recognizes our desire to create an environment of community involvement and engagement to help meet the educational enrichment needs of the students. As president, I am proud of all that we accomplished throughout the year and realize we could not do what we do without support. I am fortunate to have the opportunity to see first-hand the impact the foundation makes in our community. This past year alone, with some ingenuity and the support of our incredible foundation partners, we have been able to adapt to the incredibly challenging year and continued to serve the students of San Gabriel public schools by providing the following:
- College Essay Writing and Financial Aid Workshops for students and families
- Parent Education Workshops covering topics such as Mental Health Awareness and Cyber Safety
- Cooking and Nutrition Education Classes for students and families
- Mental Health and Wellness classes and support for teachers
- Funding for high school college counseling through the Naviance Career and College Counseling program
- Free Student Participation in SEF Programs such as:
|
SEF's Virtual Summer Academy Camp
|
Virtual Performing Arts Program
|
Mental Health and Wellness Exercise Classes ~ Pound
|
Watershed Explorer Program
|
Inaugural Art Exhibition ~ Dream. Imagine. Create.
|
We will continue to align and strengthen conditions that ensure healthy and whole child development in support of district, student and family funding priorities, but need your help. As we face the upcoming school year with health, happiness and visions of success we are actively looking for volunteers to join our cause and want you to join our team. All of these programs mentioned were not developed on their own this past year, no single person willed them into existence. Each and every board member, administrator, teacher, and volunteer gave all they could to help. Beginning with every idea expressed at a meeting, every email written or call made, they gave of their time to move the foundation forward in our efforts to accomplish goals set to serve the students. Through it all... we learned and we grew, individually and as a team. Each of us honed skills or picked up a new one, we, together became better trained and more confident civic leaders, we became friends. My hope moving forward is that we are able to convey a deeper understanding of what is important to the success of and in support of the students and how we can work together to increase the capacity and impact of the foundation.
Finally, our Champion of Education campaign is ending on June 30th and your assistance in our efforts is needed now more than ever. I am humbly asking for your financial support to help us close out this year's campaign strong! Please give as your heart leads you....your gift today large and small will help ensure we can continue to make an impact for our students in the 2021-2022 academic year. Please click here to make a tax-deductible gift today! I am confident and grateful that I can count on each of you for your loyal and enthusiastic support!!
Sending you all best wishes for a summer filled with endless joy and lots of fun!
Kindly,
Alison DeVriendt

Thanks to the Firecracker Fund, SEF & Pez Cantina are "Cooking Up" Skills for Life!!
|
SEFs vision is that every person in San Gabriel enjoys health and wellness. That includes living a healthy lifestyle and having access to healthy foods. Thanks to generous grant award funding received from the Firecracker Fund SEF has been given the opportunity to expand our cooking and nutrition education course to include youth cooking challenges.
Recently a group of students, and their families, gathered virtually to compete in a fun and engaging cooking competition. Hosted by Chef Bret Thompson, Pez Cantina the culinary event was filled with great energy and the students caramelized, sautéed and served their meals.
In preparation for the event, registered participants received a mystery box of fresh ingredients delivered directly to them from Howie’s Market. Ingredients such as: airline chicken breasts, sliced mushrooms, asparagus, onion garlic, organic white rice, fresh strawberries, and more…oh and we did not forget to add the Pez Powder!!
At the top of the event the theme was announced: Healthy Eating Around the World! The task: to create a culinary meal incorporating the ingredients in the mystery boxes. There were guidelines to follow, a culinary twist, lots of fun and a winning prize. After an hour of cooking, the student chefs were invited to introduce themselves and present their meals to the “judge”.
Excitedly, future top chef Lorelai was selected for having prepared a healthy meal, in 1 hour, incorporating all of the fresh ingredients provided in her mystery box and to make those ingredients shine!! We hope that Lorelai and her family will enjoy fabulous food from Pez Cantina with a $50 gift certificate awarded as the winning prize!!
We are looking forward to kicking off our in person programming at Jefferson Middle School in the fall and can’t wait. For now, we hope you all continue to enjoy making healthy meals and memories in your kitchens!!

SEF Receives a $10,000 Grant Award from the Pasadena Tournament of Roses Foundation
|
On behalf of the San Gabriel Educational Foundation Board of Directors, the entire community of San Gabriel and importantly the students we serve we are especially grateful to accept the incredibly generous grant award from the Pasadena Tournament of Roses Foundation.
To keep up with trends in music education as well as increase access to instruments for San Gabriel public school students, all funds received from the Pasadena Tournament of Roses Foundation will be used to purchase new instruments that will help the San Gabriel Unified School District enable equity and access for all.
“We are thrilled the Pasadena Tournament of Roses Foundation has selected SEF as one of its 2021 grantees,” stated SEF Executive Director. “The Foundation values visual and performing arts education in our community and the grant will allow us to continue to provide financial support, resources and programming for our students. We are extremely grateful for their investment in our youth.”
Since its inception in 1986, SEF has raised more than $1,000,000 towards the funding of a variety of educational programs and supplies that benefit every student, in every classroom, in the district. The Foundation supports the SGUSD in preparing its students for their future as productive citizens and lifelong learners.
Since 1983, the Pasadena Tournament of Roses Foundation, a non-profit organization, has supported charities in the Greater Pasadena area by funding programs in sports and recreation, visual and performing arts and education. To date, they have gifted over $3 million dollars to more than 200 organizations to contribute to the civic, cultural and educational advancement of its local communities.
We thank the Foundation for sharing in our vision, for their support, for making our community a better place to live and work and for making a difference in the lives of our youth. Together we are making a difference each and every day!!

Thanks to the generosity of many, SEF has provided programming and financial support serving the students of San Gabriel public schools and has made a difference in our community. Today, we are almost at the end of our 2021/21 Annual Fund Campaign and need your last minute help. The campaign, which runs each year from July 1 - June 30, helps support programs that impact the lives of students, teachers and resources in our schools. The reality is that public schools do indeed need private funding and your investment in the foundation will help us grow our mission in support of the almost 5,000 grades K-12 students we serve.
If you would like to contribute to our cause, please click here to join us and make your year end gift online today. With your support we can continue to impact the lives of our students, the schools and our community in a positive lasting way.
From everyone here at the SEF, we thank you for being our partner in support of education!
