2021 Marks PDF's 40th Anniversary!
PDF was founded in 1981 when a small group of organizers and donors from Western MA envisioned and then built a public foundation around the desire to fund peace, human rights, and environmental justice, and to address the significant threat of nuclear power and weapons.

Throughout our history, PDF operated from the philosophical and organizing principle that peace is not just the absence of war or militarism, but requires the presence of equitable relationships among people, nations, and the environment. This perspective has allowed PDF to bring a social, environmental, and economic justice lens to all our programs!

In celebration of our 40th anniversary, we are reflecting on some of PDF’s most notable endeavors: the 1986 Great Peace March for Global Nuclear Disarmament from California to Washington, DC; The Exchange Project (1984 – 2001), which provided training to 1,100 grassroots organizations from across the country; and, in 2002, PDF launched the Cross Border Initiative, coordinating organizing for immigration justice and peace amid the exploitation of land, water and people along both sides of the U.S./Mexico border.
PDF organized the Building Action for Sustainable Environments (BASE) Initiative and the Criminal Justice Initiative in the early 2000s. Both initiatives were pioneering in bringing diverse stakeholders together on particular issue areas in what was coined the “co-creation model,” cutting-edge organizing in the philanthropic field that helped set the stage for the blossoming of the environmental and criminal justice reform movements of the last decade.

More recently, PDF’s Women Peacemakers Initiative brought together feminist peace organizers from nine different countries for several days of visioning and strategic planning to help build the global movement of women peacemakers.

PDF manages an annual Community Organizing Grants program, a mission-aligned Fiscal Sponsorship Program, home to over 40 organizations and projects, a three-year Sustainability Project enrollment, building the capacity of recent grant partners, and a robust Donor Advised Fund Program

Our work is made possible through the generous support of our donors and community partners. On behalf of all of us at PDF, thank you for powering our work for 40 years! We are looking forward to 40 more years of service to peace and social justice movements!
Mark your calendar for Grassroots Funding Week
PDF's 2021 Community Organizing Grants cycle is underway. This year we received 186 grant applications from grassroots organizations, including from 43 states, as well as Mexico and Puerto Rico. Several applicants are newly founded in the wake of Black Lives Matter protests this past summer and many more organizations have shifted their work to respond to calls for racial justice.

Be sure to mark your calendars for Grassroots Funding Week: April 26th - April 30th, which is your chance to be a national grant-maker. During Grassroots Funding Week, you'll be able to review grant applicants from grassroots organizations that PDF supports, and add your voice and your support to help them meet their fundraising goals!
The Pioneer Valley Community Advised Fund (PVCAF) at PDF makes grants to organizations working for social justice in Hampden, Hampshire, and Franklin counties. The PVCAF supports community groups led by people in the Pioneer Valley with lived experience of the oppressions they are fighting, with deliberate attention given to organizations led by people of color, supported by donors who reside in the Pioneer Valley and beyond.
During this challenging year, we have received more Pioneer Valley-based applications than in previous years, including groups fighting for Black Lives, Reproductive Justice, Tenants' Rights, and Criminal Justice Reform.

As a result of this exciting energy, PDF is running a crowdfunding campaign to raise an additional $1,500 for our grant cycle, with a goal to make $10,000 in grants here in the Valley.
Help us meet this movement moment and increase the grant amounts by contributing here

Thanks to a generous donor, every dollar up to $500 will be matched, so give today and your contribution will be doubled!
Thank you for your support.
