President's Message
Dear Friends of SEF,
With the season of thankfulness and giving upon us, I have been reflecting about what I am grateful for. While I have appreciation for so many people and things in my life, I am extremely grateful for the health and wellness of my family, friends and all those around us including YOU. I am also incredibly indebted to all those who truly understand the importance and benefits of giving back to the community.
Through the years, dedicating my time to help others has taught me many valuable learning lessons and has filled me with much joy. Since those first few infamous days of March of 2020, personally my patience, resilience, empathy and flexibility has grown tremendously on what has been quite a journey for all of us.
As we recognize nothing will ever be the same after 2020, then I know you will concur that fundraising for our community education foundation will also never be the same. Working together with my strong and purposeful Board of Trustees we have continued to support a lifelong love of learning in a real-world environment that is changing daily and with your steadfast support we are determined to continue to do so.
Currently, there are a variety of ways to show your dedication to the success of SEF. We are hopeful that you will take the time to participate in one or more of all of the fundraising initiatives that we have established to garner your support. Your help today can make all the difference in our small community.
Our annual fund campaign is well on its way and to date we have garnered $3800 and we have a long way to go. Right now, SEF is raising funds that will help continue to fund programming in the 2022/23 school year! We are asking all stakeholders to participate by making a voluntary, tax-deductible donation to seffor8schools.org.
We also have two yummy fundraisers happening now and invite you to join us!

Sending you all best wishes for a season filled with health, joy, and grace.
Have a safe and wonderful happy Thanksgiving!
Kindly,
Alison DeVriendt

Why SEF Matters - Understanding Impact in the Community ~ The One Thing!
|
Chasity Jennings-Nunez, MD
City of SG HEAR Commission Chairperson
Former SEF President

1. Why do you support SEF?
I support SEF because I value access to quality public education. SEF provides programs that positively impact students at each of the SGUSD schools, from elementary to high school. The board members and Executive Director work hard to identify ways to collaborate with and strengthen the school sites.
|
Some of the district’s most successful and popular school programs have benefited from SEF’s support. The Visual and Performing Arts programs throughout the district, the Speech and Debate teams at Gabrielino and Jefferson and the Naviance College and Career planning resource at GHS have all been successful with the critical support of SEF.
As a commissioner on our city’s Human Equity, Access, and Relations (HEAR) commission, I support ways of increasing equity and inclusion in our city. SEF maintains after school library hours at GHS allowing students who don’t have ready access to tech resources or a safe, quiet space to complete homework, an opportunity to do so. The after school program offerings at JMS foster connections between diverse groups of students and introduces them to new interests from cooking to dance to coding to medicine. SEF’s strong partnership with the Kids Need To Read Foundation has provided access to 1000’s of books for students on every campus and their most recent grant from the Tournament of Roses Foundation will be used to purchase musical instruments, ensuring greater access to participation in the district's music programs.
Finally, I support SEF because they have particularly invested in Del Mar High School with funding for field trips and other activities. Insuring equity in education is critical and organizations like SEF help by bringing additional resources to our public school students.
2. In your opinion, what is the One Thing that SEF does that enriches students' lives?
The "One Thing" that SEF does that enriches students' lives is to provide opportunities to engage in new experiences. From the ACE (Architecture-Construction-Engineering) program and visiting author assemblies at GHS to the incredible variety of after school offerings at JMS to the assemblies and book distributions at the elementary schools, SEF has facilitated experiences to broaden the perspectives of our students beyond what might be available to them in their home or neighborhood. To learn is to gain knowledge by study, instruction or experience. SEF’s dedication to providing new experiences for our students truly supports learning and education.

SEF's Giving Challenge is Happening Now - Become a Champion of Education today!!

SEF believes keeping the Gabrielino High School Library & Media Center open until 5pm is vital to students' continued success and is proud to provide funding allocated towards the staffing cost to do so. Every day, dozens of 9th, 10th, 11th and 12th grade students gather together after school in the Library to study, research, collaborate and complete their homework assignments. The extended hours turn the Library and Media Center into a hub of knowledge that enables students to open their minds and expand their learning with the help of qualified staff in a quiet and safe environment.
Right now, SEF is raising funds that will help continue to fund programming in the 2022/23 school year. Included in this goal are the funds to keep the GHS Library and Media Center open after school next year. During the month of November, we invite all SGUSD families and community members to participate in our fundraising campaign to help SEF reach its goal and ensure that the GHS Library and Media Center remain open after school until 5pm next year.
We are asking all stakeholders to participate by making a voluntary, tax-deductible donation to SEF. Please, help our students and community by making your donation today. Our goal is to raise $5,000 by November 30 to help SEF fund this vital program.
Thank you for your support of SEF and our efforts. For more information about SEF or to make your donation, please visit our website at seffor8schools.org.
