President's Message
Dear Friends of SEF,
Welcome Fall! The season of change and gratitude is finally upon us. It is truly hard to believe it is already the middle of October….. I hope everyone's kids are doing well as they all adjust going back into school and participating in extracurricular activities. Here at SEF there is lots of excitement swirling as we have been busy planning for a great year ahead. Striving to increase our efforts and impact, our focus this year is to engage parents and the community members more than ever and to welcome new members to the SEF Board of Trustees.
We all know that SEF's partnerships create a powerful momentum to provide our students the tools for a successful future; and their success is the world's success. As a parent with two children attending San Gabriel public schools, I understand the value of partnerships in support of our mission. Our primary mission is simple: provide financial support to the San Gabriel Unified School District.
SEF wants to continue to do good work in the community but we do need your help....we are at a pivotal moment in our organization and we need volunteers! I often reflect on what it means to me to volunteer and why it is important. I would like to share with you a quote that comes to my mind from DeAnn Hollis that sums up my thoughts... "The heart of a volunteer is not measured in size, but by the depth of the commitment to make a difference in the lives of others."
Right now, today, there are numerous volunteer opportunities available at SEF. We are in need of wider representation, perspectives and YOU. In addition to sharing your voice we have opportunities for those of you who would like to participate in every level of operational capacity from event planning to fundraising and beyond. Volunteer opportunities are open to parents, family members, grandparents, friends, teachers, anyone who would like to support SEF, the students and the schools. We invite you to volunteer for a day, an event, or as a board member...please contact us to learn more about the volunteer position waiting for you or better yet rsvp to the upcoming board recruitment event being held on Wednesday, October 27th. Details on the flyer below...
As we look ahead, I am inspired by strong leadership, exceptional teachers, and promising young students who continue to advance in their learning and gain skills and insight. We must embrace a shared sense of responsibility for one another's well being. We must redefine engagement, reinvent connections and recommit to our mission.
Please continue to be safe, focus on family and know that our community together will continue to move forward because together we will thrive and together we can all help to create a year of excellence that meets the needs of all of the students we serve....thank you!
With best wishes always,
Alison DeVriendt
SEF President 2020-2021

SEF Grants $4,000 to GHS with After-School Media Center Support!
|
SEF believes literacy is fundamental to all areas of academic success. In support of this belief SEF is proud to announce they have provided funding support to extend the after school library hours at Gabrielino High School until 5pm on days designated by the administration.
SEF understands the library is a safe place for students to study for exams, use computers to complete assignments, and work on group projects. Additionally, we would like to give a shout out to the library staff who frequently help students locate print books, check out textbooks, and assist in accessing online resources.
SEF supporting literacy initiatives and funding priorities of the SGUSD? We say YES!!

SEF Awards $10,000 to SGUSD in Support of VAPA!
|
SEF wholeheartedly believes in the necessity and benefits of the arts in education, and its role as a powerful healing and unifying expression of San Gabriel's diverse and talented community.
We are overwhelmed by the generous support received from the Pasadena Tournament of Roses Foundation that will allow us to continue to provide much needed financial support, resources and programming for all students. We thank them and all of our donors for sharing in our vision. We are grateful for all those who are helping to make our communities a better place to live and work and for making a difference in the lives of our youth!!

SEF Celebrates SGUSD Teachers!
|
Each and every day the amazing teachers of the SGUSD continue to foster the joy of learning in their students. They continually deliver their curriculum in innovative and inspiring ways and we could not be prouder of who they are and what they do for the youth in our community.
In honor of who they are and what they do, recently, a group of dedicated volunteers gathered to assemble teacher gift bags for every credentialed teacher in the district. Each bag is filled with a Johnny Was cloth facemask and a gift certificate good for one (1) loaf of Green Street Restaurants famous zucchini bread.
Excitedly our Executive Director has begun to deliver gift bags to each of the school sites. We are grateful to our sponsors and friends from Schools First Credit Union, Johnny Was and Green Street Restaurant for giving us the opportunity to spread cheer in our community!! SEF Supporting the Team of Outstanding Teachers of the SGUSD? We say YES!!

SEF's Giving Challenge is Happening Now - Become a Champion of Education today!!
|
SEF believes keeping the Gabrielino High School Library & Media Center open until 5pm is vital to students' continued success and is proud to provide funding allocated towards the staffing cost to do so. Every day, dozens of 9th, 10th, 11th and 12th grade students gather together after school in the Library to study, research, collaborate and complete their homework assignments. The extended hours turn the Library and Media Center into a hub of knowledge that enables students to open their minds and expand their learning with the help of qualified staff in a quiet and safe environment.
Right now, SEF is raising funds that will help continue to fund programming in the 2022/23 school year. Included in this goal are the funds to keep the GHS Library and Media Center open after school next year. During the month of November, we invite all SGUSD families and community members to participate in our fundraising campaign to help SEF reach its goal and ensure that the GHS Library and Media Center remain open after school until 5pm next year.
We are asking all stakeholders to participate by making a voluntary, tax-deductible donation to SEF. Please, help our students and community by making your donation today. Our goal is to raise $5,000 by November 30 to help SEF fund this vital program.
Thank you for your support of SEF and our efforts. For more information about SEF or to make your donation, please visit our website at seffor8schools.org.
