In this issue: 2021 Oregon Logging Conference cancelled at Lane Events Center and Fairgrounds, alternate plans to celebrate the 83rd Annual Oregon Logging Conference, and fundraiser dinner planned for OLC Recovery & Repair Fire Relief Fund.
2021 OLC Cancelled
Due to the extended State of Emergency in Oregon and the restrictions that remain in place regarding COVID-19, the Oregon Logging Conference Board of Directors has announced the cancellation of the 2021 Annual Logging, Trucking, and Heavy Equipment Expo at the Lane Events Center and Fairgrounds in Eugene. The Conference has been scheduled for February 25 – 27, 2021

2021 Oregon Logging Conference president Scott Melcher said the Board of Directors had an extensive discussion and carefully considered all the issues before making the decision to cancel the annual conference.

“This was a very difficult decision for us to make,” Melcher said. “We looked at a number of ways to have the conference as usual at the Lane County Events Center and Fairgrounds, but just could not make it work with the restrictions that are in place.”

“The OLC Board felt that it was unlikely the Conference could operate in a realistic manner with the state restrictions still in place,” Oregon Logging Conference Manager Rikki Wellman said. She echoed Melcher’s comment on how difficult it was to make this decision.

“However, on a positive note,” Melcher said, “we are continuing to explore options for holding some of the events and activities associated with the 83rd annual Oregon Logging Conference both virtually, and at other locations in February of next year.” Melcher’s theme of “Family, Friends and Forestry”, will continue to be the focus. More details about these activities will be forthcoming in the near future.

The extended State of Emergency announced by Oregon Governor Kate brown on October 28th includes the mandates of social distancing and wearing face coverings, as well as limitations of 100 people or less at indoor venues and gatherings of 250 people or less at outdoor venues.

In previous years, the Annual Oregon Logging Conference gathering included more than 300 indoor and outdoor vendors, representing over 2,000 sales staff, and attracts more than 4,000 industry individuals and companies during the three-day event. Not to mention the hundreds of elementary and high school students who attend the Conference to learn about the timber industry.

Wellman said the cancellation of the Annual Oregon Logging Conference will have a significant financial impact on the area. “The annual conference brings in millions of dollars to the communities of Eugene and Springfield as well as Lane County,” she said. The revenue comes from money spent at hotels, restaurants, and other retail outlets.

The Oregon Logging Conference was established in1938 and operates as a nonprofit organization.
Plans Move Forward With A Modified
83rd Oregon Logging Conference Celebration
While we will not be gathering at the Lane Events Center and Fairgrounds for the Oregon Logging Conference - Logging, Trucking and Heavy Equipment Expo in person, plans are underway to hold a few of the events that OLC is most known for, to celebrate the Conference.

We are finding ways to develop a modified version of OLC for a new and exciting celebration of this annual tradition. Because of ongoing uncertainty, our plans could change along the way, but for now, click here for a schedule of events. .

Rest assured, we will only have activities and events that conform to the current guidelines which are in place (and no one knows what that will look like in February 2021). We are seeking to find ways that provide various opportunities for us to keep our connection with one another. We have the upmost respect for each individual or business on whether or whatever level of participation is decided. Click here for complete schedule of events.
Keeping the OLC's Famous
Sawdust Bowl Alive.
We’re planning a fun new way for everyone to enjoy the OLC’s famous sawdust bowls (yes there will be more than one!).

During the month of February 2021 we have scheduled sawdust bowls in several communities so we can come together in small numbers and celebrate.

President Scott and Wendi Melcher look forward to seeing you at the kick-off sawdust bowl at the Woods Roadhouse on Friday February 5th in Sweet Home, from 7:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. Show up to this fun no-host event, let them know you are attending the OLC Sawdust bowl and you will receive a 83rd Anniversary ball cap.

Details for these events can be found on the OLC website.
Fundraiser For OLC Fire Relief Fund
Tentative plans are set for a fundraising dinner and auction in February 2021, with proceeds to benefit the Oregon Logging Conference Recovery & Repair Fire Relief Fund. This fund was established to assist forestry contractors who suffered losses in the recent Oregon wildfires

The fundraiser is scheduled for Saturday, February 6, 2021 at 6:30 p.m., at the Sweet Home Supper Club, in Sweet Home, OR. Current restrictions limit attendance to 100.
More details are available on the OLC website or call 541.686.9191. Scan QR code if you would like to donate to the Fire Relief Fund.
Timely Topics for OLC Seminars
and Panel Discussions
Plans are underway for the Oregon Logging Conference to offer some in-person (with limited attendance) and some pre-recorded seminars and panel discussions in conjunction with the 83rd Annual conference in February of next year.

One opportunity for limited (50 person) in-person attendance is a Hands-On seminar tentatively scheduled for Thursday, February 25, 2021 at Modern Machinery and Equipment in Eugene. The topic of this seminar would be New Products and Practices for Cable Assisted Logging.

Another possible in-person seminar is tentatively scheduled for Friday, February 26, 2021, location to be determined. The topic of this panel is the Oregon Forest Practices Act, with one presentation to focus on Salvage and Restoration after the 2020 Wildfires.

At this point, several pre-recorded seminars are being planned, one on Better Ideas/New Technology and one of the Three C’s of Logging Around High Voltage Facilities (the three C’s are Communication, Coordination, and Cooperation).
