Stand Up! Speak Out!® Summer Camp

We loved our two sessions in Descanso Gardens' beautiful Harvest Gardens - their community education space with planting beds, shady spots to gather and a grove of fruit trees! Our campers built confidence, camaraderie, and communication skills while enjoying summer camp games and activities.

Highlights included a scavenger hunt through the fruit trees, making glitter jars and scented bath salts on our self-care day, performing skits, planting "resilience gardens," exploring Descanso Gardens' trails and waterfalls, and more!

Creative Connections Camp

Our two weeks of Creative Connections Camp were a blast! We made tons of art, played mindfulness games, and talked about the many ways we connect with others. But the most fun was connecting with each other! Whether we were making bath bombs, creating group collages or playing group games, everyone was able to come together while sharing ideas.

Campers walked away with a better understanding of how they connect with themselves, their communities, social media and the world. Everyone walked away with arms full of art projects reflecting these themes.

As a facilitator, the best part for me was watching the campers come together in the spirit of creativity, expression and best of all - fun!

Gender Camps: épanouie & Unicorn Day Camp

Gender Camps had two fun and connecting programs this year: épanouie and Unicorn Day Camp! Both camps were held in Descanso Gardens - who were so generous to open their doors to us this year!

At épanouie, campers enjoyed activities focused on community building, friendship skills, and transgender identity pride development in Descanso Gardens' Boddy House. The campers shared their gender journeys with one another while having a blast through water balloon games, hide and seek, decorating cake pops, and taking a beautiful walk through the Japanese Gardens.

Unicorn Day Campers had a great time connecting with other transgender and gender nonbinary youth in Descanso's Harvest Gardens. The campers planted marigolds and nurtured them throughout the week, painted windchimes, created pride pots to take their plants home, and made friendship bracelets to give their new camp friends.

Both camps had an adventurous scavenger hunt to reclaim their beloved mascot, Popcorn, the gender fluid unicorn, by following all the clues and collecting all the gender pride facts! Thankfully, we found Popcorn - it was a close call. 😊 We ended both camps with open houses to share campers' experiences and to introduce campers' new friends to their families.
