February 11, 2022
Similar to 2020, the year 2021 will always be marked as a year of pandemic challenges, but despite its difficulties, the Town of Atlantic Beach managed to make great strides in all areas of service to our citizens.

We are proud to present just a few of the successful projects we have completed in 2021!
Public Safety & Administration Complex

In January 2021, demolition of the old Town Hall was completed and construction of the new 2-story, 20,000 square foot Public Safety & Administration Complex began. By July, the bulk of the structural steelwork had taken place, and crews from Thomas Construction Group, from Wilmington, NC, confirmed that the project was 50% complete. In January 2022, one year from the initial construction start date, the Public Safety Complex was in its final stages and the Atlantic Beach Fire Department moved in. With only a few finishing touches left, both the ABPD and Town Admin offices are expected to move into the complex in March!
ABFD Received $83,000 Grant

The Atlantic Beach Fire Dept was awarded the Assistance to Firefighters (AFG) Grant in the amount of $83,000 for operational equipment to be installed in the new Public Safety & Administration Complex. The new equipment consisted of a replacement commercial washer/extractor and dryer for turnout gear as well as a new SCBA compressor for filling air bottles.
Paperless Utility Bills

The Town of Atlantic Beach utility bills received a facelift! With a recent utility billing software upgrade, not only are the new monthly water bills easier to read, but we are able to provide more information to customers online from usage history to online payment. Another great feature that we now offer to our customers is e-Billing. E-Bills are a paperless option for delivering your utility bill directly to your email inbox on the day bills are generated versus waiting for the hard copy to be delivered by mail. We invite our customers to sign up for e-Bills by contacting 252-726-1366 or [email protected]
Beach Music Festival Recap

Since cancellation in 2020, the 2021 AB Beach Music Festival returned as a huge success with 8 events throughout Beach Music Week, thousands in attendance, over $38,000 in sponsorships!
Town Park Award

In June, the Atlantic Beach, NC Town Park received the People’s Choice Award from Carteret Curated for favorite Outdoor Adventure Activity! With an 18-hole mini-golf course, skatepark, splash pad, basketball court, and playground we hope you’ll take advantage of the numerous outdoor activities at the AB Town Park this summer.
Street Paving Project

Throughout the spring and fall of 2021, the Town completed paving projects along portions of the following streets; Asbury, Bayview, Beaufort, Commerce, Freeman, Greenville, N Kinston, Ocean Ridge, Pelican, Raleigh, Shoreline, and South Charlotte. This project was completed in two phases for a total cost of $188,000.

In November, we welcomed the newly elected Atlantic Beach Town Council. Pictured from left to right; Mayor Pro Tem Austin Waters, Councilman Danny Navey, Mayor A.B. "Trace" Cooper, III, Councilman Fred Joseph Dean, and Councilman Joseph Starling. We would also like to welcome Councilwoman Renea Baker. On February 3, Ms. Baker was appointed to complete former Councilman Harry Archer's unfinished term.
Crime Map & Tip Line

The Atlantic Beach Police Department launched an online crime map called Community Crime Map (https://www.communitycrimemap.com/) that maps and analyzes crime data, alerts citizens about crimes in their area, and allows the department to quickly alert the public about crimes as they occur. Citizens can also submit an anonymous tip to the ABPD by visiting – Tip411.

Stormwater Drainage Projects

In 2021, the Atlantic Beach Town Council approved several stormwater drainage projects which brought long-sought relief to flooding-prone areas. Projects were completed along Forest Knoll/Knollwood, S. Charlotte/W. Terminal, and E. Atlantic/Greenville.
ABFD Junior Lifeguard Camp

DoubleTree East Beach Access Grant

The Town has received a $110,000 CAMA Grant for improvements to the Beach Access East of the DoubleTree by Hilton Hotel. This access is the last of 21 accesses in Town to be upgraded to meet ADA requirements. Construction is scheduled to begin in the Spring of 2022, with completion before Memorial Day.
ABPD Community Involvement

At the beginning of 2021, Police Chief Harvey worked with the Carteret Community college to offer more localized Law Enforcement Officer training here in Carteret County. This fall, the Atlantic Beach Police Department joined businesses in Morehead City and Atlantic Beach in a fundraiser to provide Christmas gifts for a local family in need. Clothing, toys, and monetary donations were collected and given to a family with two young children.
CAMA Land Use Plan Update

The Town of Atlantic Beach updated their CAMA Land Use Plan in July 2021. A Land Use Plan guides land use and development, and Atlantic Beach’s 2008 Land Use Plan was due for an update. The newly adopted plan places emphasis on small town look/feel, stormwater infrastructure, and redevelopment of the Circle and Causeway areas, among other initiatives.
