PRESS RELEASE: Report Highlights Viability of 8K Live Production and Delivery

The 8K Association (8KA) has released an updated report on the State of Live 8K Production. It covers standards, codecs, encoders, decoders, demos, and workflows for Live 8K Video Production. You can read the press release and download the report from here.

Video Quick Takes from IFA

Samsung is the dominant supplier of 8K TVs and all other TVs - it has around a third of the market but around 2/3 of the 8K set market. It was at IFA promoting the 8K Neo QLED sets and its MicroLED and QD-OLED sets, which are just 4k.

LG was also highlighting its QNED miniLED 8K sets at the show. It also had a new 97" OLED, but sadly, it's only 4K.

In the absence of Sony (apart from meetings with dealers) and Philips, TCL made a big statement about its 8K sets, including the biggest.

In the IFA Next technology section, Bob spotted a company from China called Kanda that has an 8K 360-degree camera that can live stream 8K raw video for security and other applications. 8K really makes a huge difference when you are capturing 360-degree video. Kanda also has a 12K version based on an engine from the Fraunhofer HHI.

Vestel also licenses the Toshiba brand for TVs in Europe.

The Fujifilm X-H2 the First APS-C Camera That Can Shoot 8K

PetePixel reports that Fujifilm is the latest company to offer a mirrorless camera capable of capturing vide at 8K. Unfortunately, that only means 30fps which may be ok for a cinematic look but not for other genres where we think 60fps should be the minimum. It has a backside illuminated sensor with a rolling shutter and is identical to the Figifilm X-H2S except for the higher resolution sensor. It does support internal ProRes recording as well. Some initial reveiws have been posted already, like this one and sample footage here.
