Camera-to-Cloud Solves Some, but Not All Production Needs


Adobe’s Frame.io subsidiary has announced new Camera-to-Cloud (C2C) capabilities. New is the ability to support C2C without needing an external encoder/recorder/media gateway. This is built into the RED V-Raptor cameras to upload REDCODE RAW files directly to the cloud – even up to 8K!. Thanks to VRR, Your 8K TV May Be Your Best 4K 120 Gaming Display


Although 8K TVs are usually designed for watching video content, it turns out that they may actually be outstanding displays for playing games at "lower" resolutions, such as 4K, but with higher refresh rates, up to 120Hz. Bob Raikes has published a piece on our Discover8K site here.

ATOMOS Offers 8K Image Sensor to Third Parties


Australia-based ATOMOS, perhaps best known for their camera displays/recorders, has revealed that an 8K image sensor called Sapphire they have been working on for five years, is now at the point where they are showing it to other manufacturers. The goal is to offer the image sensor only, not to build a camera. Chris Chnnock's article is here.

USB4 to Double Output - USB-C & Thunderbolt 5 to Support Dual 8K Monitors


The USB Implementors' Forum announced that they had doubled the effective speed of USB4 interfaces to 80Gbps using existing cables. However, new transmitters and receivers will be needed. There will also be a new active cable specification to support 80Gbps over longer lengths. USB Type-C will allow up to 120Gbps across three 40Gbps lanes. This development will take away a significant roadblock for further improvements to 8K display development by enabling multiple and high frame rate displays. Bob Raikes's explainer is here.

IP 8K Signal Routing from the Beijing 2022 Winter Olympics


China Media Group (CMG) used the SMPTE 2022 conference in Hollywood to give a paper on the complex IP network used for 8K broadcasts to consumers in China. The report will be available from SMPTE soon for those wishing to see the full details. Here, we present a summary of the key elements.

RED V-RAPTOR S35– 8K 120fps, $19.5K USD


We've often reported on entry-level 8K cameras before. But was is exciting here is that this is a camera usually positioned in the cinema category, and most importantly, it can shoot up to 120 fps. Of course, as with all things RED, you need to spend a bit more to have a working camera with such basics as a handle, a memory card, and a lens, so entry prices will be closer to 30k.. Hikvision unveils industry’s first “True 8K” NVRs


Hikvision makes equipment for the security market, and an "NVR" is a network video recorder. This recorder apparently uses HEVC to record at up to 8K/30 fps. They say they can use Hikvision cameras, but the most megapixels camera they offer are 12MP, with true 8K video, requiring at least 33 MP, so we need clarification. Read the news here.
