June 1, 2022
Hello New AHS Students and Families,

We are looking forward to having you join the AHS community for the 2022/23 school year!

Now is the time to review course offerings and choose electives, using the following steps. You can make edits to your course requests in Infinite Campus at any time until student schedules are built and we will review schedules with new students during Student Orientation in August. There is also an Add/Drop period at the start of each semester that allows students to make changes in their electives.

STEP 1: Create your Infinite Campus Parent Portal

Complete IC Online Registration here. Most of our new families have already completed this step. Note that new students will get their own Infinite Campus Student Portal account information during AHS Student Orientation in August. New students must complete course requests through the IC Parent Portal.

STEP 2: View the 2022/23 Course Catalog to determine which elective courses you would like to take

What interests you? What might colleges look for in the major you are considering? Do you need to make up credit for a subject you have failed or need to catch up in graduation requirements? View our Guide to Course Selection and College Readiness to understand the role course selection can play in the college admissions process. Transfer students who will be entering 10th, 11th or 12th grade must connect with us to review transcripts and understand what courses to take for an on-time AHS graduation. If you have not yet submitted transcripts and met with Maureen Truax, please email me at [email protected].

All incoming 9th graders will be placed in a section of Digital Arts Foundations 5th, 6th or 7th period fall semester and all incoming 10th, 11th and 12th grade students will automatically be placed in Digital Arts for Transfer Students 1st period fall semester in order to provide foundational skills, including creation of a Digital Portfolio.

STEP 3: Make a plan for the whole year by determining which elective you would ideally want for each period that is not filled by a core class

AHS has a 7 period Bell Schedule. View the 22/23 Electives Schedule to see which periods each elective course will be offered. Core Classes (Humanities, Math, Science plus Digital Art for 9th graders) meet during specific periods, and the periods that can be filled with electives vary by grade. Use these schedule templates to see which periods are open for electives for your grade level for next year.

Choose an elective or Project Application for every free period you have both semesters. Consider that some electives are yearlong and some are only semester long. You must choose electives for all year so if you request a semester-long elective 1 semester, be sure to request another semester-long elective for that period in the other half of the year. Do not request more than 1 elective offered during the same period.
Be sure to choose 2 alternate courses, 1 per semester. Alternate courses can be electives that meet any open elective period for your grade.Pay attention to prerequisites. An asterisk (*) indicates the course has a prerequisite which must be completed before enrolling or that the course is only available to upper grades. “Adv” = Advanced. See the 2022/23 Course Catalog for details. We will do our best to honor your requests, but not everyone will always get their first choices.

STEP 4: Make course requests in Infinite Campus.

Login to your Infinite Campus Parent Portal. Go to More > Course Registration.
Click 22-23 Animas High School
You will see that your core classes are already entered.
Click Add Course to view electives.
You can search or scroll through courses. Select the elective courses you wrote in your schedule template. Click on a course title to see prerequisites and course descriptions. Courses that are 2 units are semester long and courses that are 4 units are yearlong. Select a course that you want to request. You will not see specific periods in IC. Just request the course and we will take care of the rest.
Click Request to add that class as your first choice. Do this for all your first-choice courses. Double check the Elective Schedule to make sure you're not requesting more than one class per period. Next, click Alternate to add the classes that are your back-up choices.
All students but seniors need to reach 100% completion, with 56/56 units requested plus at least 2 alternate courses.

Seniors only need 36/56 units, with at least 2 alternate classes, but should select more than 36 units for a fuller schedule. Seniors may have up to 2 free periods, provided you are on track to complete all graduation requirements.
All requests are saved automatically. You can make changes in your IC portal up until we create student schedules, which will be in mid-June. Your next opportunity to make changes will be at the start of the 2022/23 school year, so choose carefully!

As you prepare to make course requests, keep in mind that we are all here to help! Feel free to email me at [email protected] with questions.

We hope your school year finishes strong (or has already finished strong)! We will be in touch over the summer with opportunities to connect with the Animas community and look forward to welcoming you all to the Nest on August 22 for the start of the 22/23 school year!

Cheers,
Libby
