Two thoughts come to mind about golf: one, the very funny stories by P. G. Wodehouse (and even funnier television adaptation by Hugh Laurie as Bertie Wooster); and two, my own stint several decades ago of attempting the game – I actually had lessons. When my very nice brother-in-law spoke to my “pro” to get his suggestions for what kind of balls would be appropriate for me to use, the “pro” said “Cheap! They’re all going in the water!” Golf is not for me. I gave it up. But I still like reading about it. Mr. Updike’s Golf Dreams is a delight – fiction, essays, even poetry. Whether like me you have given up the dratted game, or whether you still play – and dream of the ball landing on the green and rolling towards the pin -- this is a book for you! And not often found in a signed First Edition copy. Cheers (er Fore!) Nick | | |
