President's Message
Dearest Friends of SEF,
It is with my absolute honor to share that I have been elected as the new President of SEF.
My name is Paul Kwo, a local educator, entrepreneur, and San Gabriel resident of 30+ years. I grew up in San Gabriel, and went to McKinley Elementary, Jefferson Intermediate, and Gabrielino High School (first graduating class of 1998). Between 2011-2013, I was the President of Gabrielino Alumni Association. I also established a performing arts school, PopRock Academy, in 2011, and have provided acting, music, and dance education to thousands of students in San Gabriel Valley. I am also a working actor and performer involved in numerous projects in Hollywood.
It has been such a blessing growing up here, witnessing the transformation of the school district and SEF. The past few years have been tough for everyone, including SEF. The sheer fact that the organization is still intact is a testament to all the hard work of my predecessors, and all our current staff and board members.
As the President of SEF this year, my goal is to elevate the organization, increase awareness in the community, and create more resources and opportunities for our students. Here are some exciting projects already in the works:
-
Read. Imagine. Design. – our second annual district wide literacy and arts event that students participate by reading a book, imagining the story to life, and then re-designing the book cover. Winners will have their designs displayed on street pole banners around the historic Mission District.
-
Young Engineers For A Green Future – an engineering program that provides the students of Jefferson Middle School access to lectures and hands-on projects on green infrastructure.
-
SEF Website Revamp – a refresh of our website to strengthen our branding and get more people to understand and join our great cause.
I look forward to meeting you all at our events this coming year. As a reminder, here are some ways you can support our great cause any time:
-
Make personal donations directly on our website: https://seffor8schools.org/give
- Sign up as volunteers for upcoming events.
- Refer any business or corporation that would like to be more involved with their community.
Let’s build a brighter tomorrow together.
Yours truly,
Paul Kwo
SEF President

Announcing SEF's 2022 Community Literacy Event!!!
|
SEF is inviting ALL K-12 SGUSD students to participate in our district wide literacy event. This year our theme is Read. Imagine. Design. ~ The Story of a Book Cover Reimagined by YOU!
The Read. Imagine. Design. event focuses on literacy and art! We want to get our SGUSD students excited about reading a book, and re-designing the book cover! The event is open to all SGUSD students Kindergarten to 12th grade.
This event has been designed to help students demonstrate their comprehension, and also allow them to use their imagination and creativity to reimagine the book cover based on the story they read.
We are excited to share the amazing talent these students have as a limited number of qualifying entries will be going up on pole banners in the historic San Gabriel Mission District. We look forward to this event bringing the community together!
Don't miss out ~ Submission deadline September 19, 2022

Why SEF Matters - Understanding Impact in the Community ~ The One Thing!

1. Why do you support SEF?
I support the San Gabriel Education Foundation because of the Foundation's continual goal to connect San Gabriel students, schools, parents, and the community. SEF regularly offers an array of events, classes, and opportunities for San Gabriel families and staff. I believe that because of these opportunities, it has helped the San Gabriel community grow stronger and closer.
As an advocate for health and wellness, SEF has held multiple events that help the community connect with their own health and wellness. When we are healthy physically and mentally, we are able to lead fulfilling lives that inspire others. SEF demonstrates and communicates these values to the students, parents, and staff in the San Gabriel Unified School District. It is a privilege to work alongside SEF as it continues to bridge any gap between education and community. I look forward to watching our future leaders develop and flourish because of the opportunities SEF provides.
2. In your opinion, what is the ONE thing that SEF does that enriches students' lives?
I believe that SEF enriches students' lives by investing in San Gabriel teachers. When SEF invests in the teachers of San Gabriel, teachers are more equipped and ready to serve their students. Our youth is directly impacted by their teachers on a daily basis and SEF is constantly supporting those teachers with opportunities in health and emotional wellness.
