Dear Valued Customer,

Every year at this time, we are called upon to heighten our awareness of the weather systems that affect our islands as the Atlantic hurricane season approaches. Every year, we are reminded of our duty to prepare for hurricane season. With adequate preparation, our families, businesses, and country can be in the best position to recover should a hurricane affect us. This year is no different. The forecast for hurricane season 2022 points to an above-average season, with 19 named storms and nine hurricanes – four of which will be Category 3 or higher.

As the energy provider to the Turks and Caicos Islands (TCI), FortisTCI’s hurricane preparedness plans are updated, tested, and in place. The company also continues to monitor conditions for any necessary changes. We know that having a comprehensive and well-thought-out hurricane preparedness plan completed early reduces unnecessary risks and limits the impact of a disaster. We also take our promise to deliver safe, reliable electricity service to you seriously, especially when you need it most. Thus, disaster management and hurricane preparedness are critical to our operations.

While the ultimate hope is that we never have to activate these plans, we are prepared to navigate this hurricane season safely and efficiently. The company’s Business Continuity Management System (BCMS) and annual hurricane plans reflect required COVID-19 guidelines, as they have done over the past two years. In this regard, our ISO 22301, 14001, and 45001 certifications continue to serve the company and our customers well.

We also recognize the importance of partnerships in our preparedness and response efforts. In this regard, the company is pleased to support the efforts of the TCI government in ensuring that the country is ready for the season. I also acknowledge the Department of Disaster Management & Emergencies (DDME), whose ongoing efforts at disaster preparedness and response are highly commendable. I encourage everyone to pay attention to their calls for preparedness. We all have a responsibility to ensure that the Turks and Caicos is ready to weather any storm.

I also want to express my sincerest gratitude to my colleagues who work every day to make sure that at FortisTCI, we are always ready to respond. The Chairman of the FortisTCI Hurricane Committee, Alvejes Desir, has provided regular updates to the team and encouraged early preparedness at home and in the workplace over the past several months. It reflects our belief that proper preparedness is not a once-a-year occurrence but an everyday duty, and I thank you for your commitment.

Sincerely,

Ruth Forbes
