MFGA's 2022 Green Gold Program Highlights provided in Final Report

This year, the MFGA Green Gold Program included 21 registered fields from Central, Eastern, Interlake, and Western Manitoba. Alfalfa sampling began on May 30 with a starting height of 10 inches. The cool wet conditions at the outset of the growing season delayed the potential optimum cutting date by 5-7 days. By end of testing on June 15, the bulk of the fields were in the late vegetative/early bud stage, ranging from 17 to 34 inches in height due to intense wet growing conditions.

Through testing, the MFGA Green Gold Program declared the 2022 Optimum Alfalfa Harvest Dates as:
CENTRAL: June 20
WESTERN: June 20
EASTERN/INTERLAKE: June 16
About the MFGA Green Gold Program:

MFGA’s Green Gold Program represents MFGA's longest-running producer-based program for Manitoba forage producers. The goal of the program is to work with producers on their first cut alfalfa hay crop harvest. By clipping and submitting field samples from prescribed fields in the Central, Eastern/Interlake and Western regions during the months of May and June, the MFGA Green Gold program enables farmers to make decisions based on their specific feed/market needs and field observations.

The program relies on alfalfa, dairy and beef producers who donate their time to clip and submit alfalfa samples twice weekly and on the support of Winnipeg's Central Testing Laboratory who performs real time testing of the samples.
