Mequon Community Foundation will be honoring Gregory (Sandy) Custer as the 2022 Pillar of the Community. Sandy’s life of service began when he joined the Air Force, enlisting for six years of active duty, flying cargo planes, and training Vietnamese pilots during the war. He received multiple Air Medals and the prestigious Distinguished Flying Cross, awarded to an elite few who distinguish themselves by acts of heroism or extraordinary achievement in flight.
After returning, Sandy graduated from Marquette’s School of Dentistry with honors and established his dental practice in Mequon’s Jonathan Clark House, where he worked for 30 years. Sandy continued his military service for seventeen of those years, flying in the Air National Guard two days per week while maintaining a full-time dentistry practice.
To this day, Sandy gives back to the profession he loves by teaching at the Dental School, which he's been doing for 30+ years. He has also been involved in various community organizations such as serving on the Board of the Mequon Nature Preserve, Gathering on the Green, the Mequon Park Board, and being appointed first Chairman of the Mequon Landmarks Commission.

While we continue to raise funds, $49,000 was raised to go towards the Highland Road Bike Path Project this past year. This path will enhance the accessibility of the Park while providing connectivity to the Interurban Trail. In addition, the Highland Road Bike Path will resolve safety issues for residents along the 1.5 miles of the proposed path and enhance the Mequon Community!
