2021 Nevada Regents' Rising Researcher Award Recipient

Javon Johnson
Assistant Professor
Director, African American & African Diaspora Studies Program
Department of Interdisciplinary Gender and Ethnic Studies
College of Liberal Arts

Dr. Javon Johnson studies the performances of Blackness on stage, off stage in everyday life, and everywhere in between to examine what those performances communicate to the world. Given the racial reckoning that has taken place across our nation, the Regents Rising Researcher award is especially important to him. He studies Blackness, structural racism, sexism, homophobia, racial capitalism, and the persistent efforts of settler colonialism as a practice, ideology, and a foundation. To have his work recognized during our nation’s racial pandemic elevates the importance of this research and its impact on our society.
