2022 Gubernatorial Voter Guide Dear Friends, The election is just around the corner and early voting will begin in just under two weeks! Many House and Senate seats hang in the balance, but perhaps the most critical race hanging in the balance is the race for Governor. As the highest elected official in the state, the Governor holds the power that truly determines the culture of the state, its success, its failures, and everything in between. As we approach the election in November, it is imperative to consider the powers that the governor holds and how it can affect our state when considering the issues we are already facing. While there are many powers that the governor holds, such as budget approvals, enactment of legislation, veto power, confirmation of executive and judicial appointments and more, there are powers that can specifically affect some of the issues New Mexico is currently facing. These specific powers include:

Allocation of Executive capital funds without legislative approval For Example, the governor's most recent Executive Order allocates $10 million to develop abortion clinic services. These funds will be used from the Executive’s capital allocation for the upcoming 2023 legislative session and does not require legislative approval.

Advancement and pursuit of new and revised policies or programs For Example, the instructions in the governor’s executive orders to two state agencies to determine how to leverage state resources to increase abortion access and create agency policy to protect it. This pursuit does not require legislative approval.

Appointment of non-elected cabinet members who can create regulations that hold the force of law For example, if the Department of Human Services, which is run by a governor appointed cabinet member, creates regulations that protect abortion, those regulations have the force of law without legislative involvement.

New Mexico has been known as the Land of Enchantment, but there is nothing enchanting about a state that is known for being first on every bad list and last on every good list. This election gives us the opportunity to take a good look at where things are in New Mexico and to determine where we want them to go. Then, we must consider which candidate can get us there. New Mexico Family Action Movement has created a Gubernatorial Voter Guide that clearly states the issues and where each candidate stands on these issues. Allow your vote to be educated and informed by considering the issues, considering the candidates, and voting for the future of the Land of Enchantment.
