My Superpower Is the Best Superpower by Tobi Henschel
Living in a house with three small boys means I’m surrounded by a lot of superhero paraphernalia, and I often hear statements like, “I can shoot ice from my hands,” or “My superpower is the best superpower!”
Sometimes I wish I had superpowers to help my husband with his endless pastoral workload, that I could finish all of his administrative tasks in a few seconds and give him supernatural boosts of energy to make it through.
The reality is I already have the best superpower for helping my husband—prayer! I can bring anything and everything before our great and almighty God, Who holds everything in His hands.
The apostle Paul asked the Ephesian church to pray for him. He needed the prayer support of his church family to do what God called him to do in his ministry, just as my husband needs my prayer support to do his job. We spend precious times of prayer together over church matters, and God uses those times to knit us closer together as a couple and as His servants. It grows our love for each other and our shared ministry. It brings us peace in the midst of uncertainty and the courage to face the unknown.
At times when I don’t know what to pray, I am comforted that the Holy Spirit intercedes for me (Romans 8:26) and by how often He gives me the words to pray once I begin. I also enjoy taking a verse from Scripture and praying it for my husband (who is also named Paul), like Psalm 34:8, “Let Paul taste and see that the Lord is good; blessed is Paul when he takes refuge in You.” Sometimes I use prayer challenges online, like this basic prayer from ibelieve.com, “Pray that your husband would put his relationship with God above all other relationships, including yours. Pray he would have a burning desire to know the Lord more closely and surrender all of his life to God.” Spending time in prayer for my husband not only blesses him but grows my relationship with him and with God. How can you pray for your husband today?
Lord, I lift up to You, my husband. Give him Your grace to face whatever comes today. Grow his love and passion for You that He can serve You well.
Our Superpower Prayer Verses
Ephesians 6:18-20 NIV
“Praying at all times in the Spirit, with all prayer and supplication. To that end keep alert with all perseverance, making supplication for all the saints, and also for me, that words may be given to me in opening my mouth boldly to proclaim the mystery of the gospel, for which I am an ambassador in chains, that I may declare it boldly, as I ought to speak.”
Romans 8:26-27 NIV
“In the same way, the Spirit helps us in our weakness. We do not know what we ought to pray for, but the Spirit himself intercedes for us through wordless groans. And he who searches our hearts knows the mind of the Spirit, because the Spirit intercedes for God’s people in accordance with the will of God.”
