Peter Brant's Rougir recovers from trouble, Canadian-bred Moira barges her way to second only to be disqualified.
Rougir (Fra), far left, shipped north from the US by trainer Chad Brown, overcame trouble to win the Grade 1 E.P. Taylor Stakes at Woodbine on Oct. 8. Canadian star Moira, (far right) ran a big race to be second but was later disqualified. (Michael Burns photo)
American invader Rougir won the Grade 1 E.P. Taylor Stakes by a neck over Canadian-bred star Moira on October 8 at Woodbine but the race was messy enough that the result was unofficial for some time after both the winner and runner-up had troubled trips. Undefeated Flightline, pointed toward the Longines Breeders' Cup Classic (G1) Nov. 5 at Keeneland, continues to lead the Longines World's Best Racehorse Rankings for 2022 through races run up until Oct. 9. More from the BloodHorse here.
The magic victory involved an 8-year-old mare, winless in '22, trained by a 95-year-old and ridden by a young jock who had never won a race.

It was the last race of this past Friday’s thoroughbred card at Century Mile. Nothing special, that’s for sure: a field of bottom claimers goings six furlongs on a wonderfully warm evening that was getting late. And then poof. It all became magical... Top NFL Picks by TravyFootball: Week 6
Bills over Chiefs (Sunday afternoon): The rematch everyone has been waiting for since last year's playoffs, Josh Allen and the Bills will head to Kansas City to take on Pat Mahomes and the Chiefs. For the first time in his career, Mahomes is actually the underdog at home. This one might be a shootout, but the difference between these teams right now is the Bills defense is much better. If it wasn’t for two receivers running into each other on the final play, the Chiefs very well could have lost to the Raiders last week, whereas the Bills absolutely dismantled the Steelers and barely broke a sweat doing it. This game also might be a preview of the AFC Championship come January. Buckle up!

Cowboys over Eagles (Sunday night): In the other marquee matchup of the day that nobody saw coming after Dak Prescott went down with his hand injury, the somehow 4-1 Cowboys travel to Philadelphia to take on the still undefeated Eagles. Cooper Rush has done a remarkable job of managing the game and more importantly, not turning the ball over. Backup quarterbacks tend to be all over the place when they are thrown into action, but Rush has kept his calm and doesn’t try to do more than he is asked to do. That’s why the Cowboys are in a position to take over first place in the division. This will be the toughest test for the Eagles yet, and their undefeated streak could seriously be in jeopardy.

Rams over Panthers (Sunday afternoon): The Rams are coming off back-to-back losses against the 49ers and the Cowboys. They certainly don’t look like the team that won the Super Bowl last season. There's been no running game whatsoever, nobody can catch a pass other than Cooper Kupp, and the defense is giving up a lot of points. Lucky for them, they get a matchup with the lowly Carolina Panthers. It's been a rough week for the folks in Carolina. Their coach, Matt Rhule, was fired on Monday after going 11-27 in two-plus years, starting QB Baker Mayfield was injured and is out for at least a month, and they also suffered a crushing defeat at the hands of my 49ers last Sunday. Former Cardinals head coach Steve Wilks will take over on an interim basis, and PJ Walker will be the new starting QB for the time being. Don’t expect too much to change though, same mess, different pile. This season is already a write off for them and it's only Week 6.

A Snapshot in Time
By Track Historian Bob Gates
On June 19, 1968, Assiniboia Downs played host to the 12 Miss Manitoba Contestants. The race named in their honour was won by Navins Belle owned by Gumprich Enterprises. Here the 12 contestants pose for a group shot on the second floor clubhouse. Can you remember or spot the soon to be named Miss Manitoba? The winner was Karen Hawthorn (back row second from the left).
