Color and an Artist
2115 Monday, July 18

It was one month ago today that Tazzarin sailed out of Manchester Harbor to start this adventure. As I have reflected on the past month I realize that there is something that pulls me to this part of the world, something that brings me new surprises, new energy each day. Color. It sounds simple; but, whether it is the vibrant oranges in a puffin's beak, the deep blue of a seaside iris, fields of lupin, sunsets, the blue of the sea, or the colors that Newfoundlanders put in their life from jelly bean row houses to vibrant fish shacks along a waterfront, laundry out to dry, the color of an outport house and trim, or the orange of crab pots and buoys and the blue/green of the thousands of feet of neatly organized warp flaked on deck of a fishing boat, the color moves me, brings feeling.

Today Annie and I visited Witless Bay to watch puffins and whales, then spent a couple of hours in the outport of Petty Harbour wandering the cozy lanes, a stop at Cape Spear and then a walk along the waterfront in St. John's after dinner

So, browse the photos below, drink in the colors. Then I want to tell you about somebody who knows the essence of color in Canada better than anyone. So, please don't skip the bottom of this email.
Annie took the artsy photo of the iris amidst green grass against blue sea. Now, about a man who knows color and helped me to see it differently. In 2017 I was hired by an expedition travel company called Adventure Canada to be a guide for a special trip they were running to Sable Island, perched on the edge of the continental shelf 100 miles southeast of Nova Scotia. Also on board was a fellow by the name of Andrew Sookrah. At first I, and Annie, were drawn to Andrew because of his amiable, easy nature. I soon learned that he was a renowned artist from Toronto. He kindly shared his studies and paintings of Sable Island's incomparable landscape and wildlife. I quickly realized that Andrew understood color in ways I had not imagined. He captures the essence of Newfoundland and Labrador and the arctic in ways unmatched since artists first chased after these regions in search of nature's wonders. Annie and I have a cherished painting of a seal on Sable Island by Andrew that hangs in the front hall of our home.

Because Andrew became a friend, and because he knows the colors of this region, I hope you might take a look at some of his works. He is one of my friends who is reading these daily emails and occasionally exchanging a note with me. I encourage you to view his images of the Arctic and icebergs, Sable Island, Gros Morne National Park in Newfoundland and his watercolors. Click Here. See the colors of these places through Andrew's eyes. It has made me richer.
