1730 Sunday, July 31
It is Sunday today. I am reminded that in every small fishing outport I have visited here, there are always one or two churches, usually fairly well kept. Much of Newfoundland is Christian and many people do observe services on Sundays. Adjacent to most churches, or on the fringe of the outport, one always finds a small graveyard. Some of the stones can be quite early.
St. George's Church in Brigus, shown above, is now a registered historic structure in the province. It was built in the Gothic Revival style in 1876 and largely in its original condition with few changes. The building now serves largely as a museum in the small town. The cemetery, shown below has vistas out to sea. Today, most churches in outports are considerable smaller and simpler in design.
Churches are a part of life, and weddings, baptisms and other events take place. However, I suppose that if you come from a fishing family in an outport town and are getting married, you might use some other backdrops for the wedding photos, as shown in the bottom photo below!
