Red Devon cattle arrived in North America 400 years ago. And one big, beautiful Red Devon cow arrived at the Living History Farm this month!
Devons were introduced in the Americas in 1623 aboard a ship named Charity. Pilgrims brought a bull and three heifers to Plymouth Colony. Known for their docile temperament, this historic breed is native to southwestern England and famed for their high quality beef, rich milk and excellent grazing ability on coarse foliage. In addition, they were the draft animal of choice pulling wagons west on the Oregon Trail.

Our cow was purchased from Walker Century Farms, in Anderson, SC., and as an added bonus, she is pregnant and due sometime in the fall.
What’s the cow’s name, you ask? We need your help picking one! Submit a name suggestion during our Cow Naming Contest by visiting us during Summer Adventure. The winner will receive a one-year Family membership, a Summer Adventure t-shirt and a $50 Barnes and Noble gift card. Use QR code to enter. Only one entry per email. Contest ends July 1st and the winner will be announced July 8th.

Volunteering on the farm!
A hard working, devoted team of employees from HDR volunteered over 2 days to install 400 ft of pasture fencing, which will aid our efforts to rotationally graze our farm animals. Hats off to this group for rising to the challenge!
We are grateful to JTEKT, who partnered with us again this year by sending dozens of volunteers to complete a multitude of projects on HOG Day–United Way’s Hands On Greenville Day.

Did you know that sustainability practices include emphasizing native plants? Native plants or indigenous plants have adapted to the conditions found within this region over thousands of years. Since native plants have evolved over such a historic period of time, they’re able to support other species and are better able to adapt to their natural environments so that they can thrive. As a result, native plants have formed a symbiotic, or mutually beneficial relationship with native wildlife, resulting in a sustainable habitat.
|
|
Native wildlife have evolved with native plants and are adapted to them, especially insects that have co- evolved with the plants. So many things depend upon plants and insects in that early part of the food chain and food web. For instance, a native oak tree can support 500 species of caterpillars! Compare that with a ginkgo tree, which is non-native, and supports only about five species of caterpillars. Going up the food chain, it takes lots of caterpillars – like 6,000 caterpillars – just to support one family of chickadees.
At Roper Mountain, we feature native plants in our new Sustainability Garden, sponsored by Duke Energy, and designed by Clemson students. It is located in front of our Environmental Science and Sustainability Building. In addition, our Butterfly Garden and Heritage Gardens highlight many natives. Visit our gardens this summer during our Summer Adventure which runs June 1 to July 29.
