Jean Miller-President

Jean and her husband, Matt, have been members of All Souls since 2003. Their children, David (26) and Grace (23), grew up in the church, and Jean taught RE for many of those years. Jean has served All Souls in many roles, most recently as President for the past two years and Vice President the year before that. She also chaired the Council several years ago and served on the re-vamped Program Council. She has also served on the Governance Committee, Personnel Committee, the RE Committee, Bruce Clear’s Sabbatical Committee, and she has chaired hiring committees and the Nominating Committee. She attended UUA’s Midwest Leadership School in 2020, the Jubilee Three Anti-Racism Workshop in 2021, and is currently participating in UUA’s Extended Leadership Experience training. Jean recently retired from the non-profit organization, the Indiana Recycling Coalition, where she was the Director of Administration for nearly 10 years. She has extensive nonprofit management experience from this role as well as from leading many other volunteer-run nonprofit organizations over the years. She loves nonprofit management and believes her knowledge and skills will continue to be valuable to the All Souls Board during her third and final year as Board President.

Julia VanDeren-Vice President

Julia VanDeren and her wife, Jennifer Carnahan, have been members of All Souls Indy since 2015. Since joining, All Souls has been an important part of Julia’s family’s life. Rev. Anastasia officiated her and Jennifer’s wedding. Their daughter, Ada, has blossomed in the religious education program. And, Julia has been able to serve in a variety of volunteer roles. She has served on a hiring committee, is a nursery volunteer, and served on the Program Council. Prior to moving to Indiana in 2014, Julia was an active member of a UU congregation in the metro-Milwaukee area. There she also volunteered in the nursery, led a chalice circle, and served as an usher. Julia’s professional background is in nonprofit associations. She worked for a large global nonprofit membership association in the investment management industry and then later for a small Indiana chapter of a nonprofit trade association in the long term care industry. In these roles she has gained meaningful experience in many aspects of nonprofit management. In addition, Julia holds a Master of Public Administration degree from Virginia Commonwealth University with a concentration in nonprofit management. She earned her undergraduate degree from the University of Virginia and a graduate certificate in project management from the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee.

She has sung in the All Souls choir since she first started attending, and her two sons, Nick (34) and Rob (31) Ready, grew up in the RE classes at All Souls. Along with dedicating many years to the choir, Jane has served on the board, been a member of the Diversity & Inclusion Team, works in the Butterfly Garden, served on the Ministerial Search Committee that brought our first female minister to All Souls, Rev. Anastassia Zinke, and she also served on the Interim Search Team that brought Rev. Joel Miller to serve as our Interim Minister. Carmelo Leal-Trustee (2023-2026)

I have been attending all souls for the past 13 years with my wife and our kids( at

the time it was only our Lydia(16 now)). I remember coming into all souls and

being received with a warm welcome from the people and when in service it felt like I had found the place where I belonged. I feel a sense of pride in our community every time I enter the sanctuary and read our covenant.

Learning about different religions with an open mind is something I have found to be comforting. I grew up Catholic, but when I learned about different faiths it taught me the importance of inclusivity and acknowledging that everyone has a right to their own free search for meaning. This was one of the main reasons We wanted to raise our young daughter Lydia and years later our Elena (6) who was born into our Unitarian community. During this time we both have been involved in many different ways, sharing our time and talents and intend to keep doing so for as long as we can. This place is sacred to me not only because I can feel the spirituality when I'm in the sanctuary but also because I feel a responsibility to make a difference in the community both within and beyond these walls. The seventh principle is the one I cherish the most: Respect for the interdependent web of all existence of which we are a part. After all, service is its law.
