Redefining Youth Entrepreneurship: NFTE's Metaverse Pitch Competition and Students' AI-inspired Business Ideas

As the business landscape is rapidly reshaped by technological advances, take comfort in knowing Network for Teaching Entrepreneurship (NFTE) students are already embracing new frontiers of technology and entrepreneurship!

The latest example occurred on August 9 in the Southeast region, which hosted NFTE’s first-ever business pitch competition in the Metaverse, a live virtual environment.

The Startup Summer Investment Panel Competition was generously supported by Link Logistics. NFTE Southeast Executive Director Chris Brignolle described it as a “game changer” for today’s digital natives. Six aspiring young entrepreneurs, who had just completed a 6-week NFTE BizCamp, entered augmented reality (AR) to compete for $10,000 in Startup Summer prizes. The $5,000 top prize went to ShoeCentrix, the idea of Christopher Romero, Jr., a student at Fort Lauderdale High School in Broward County, Florida. Piwich Pro by Demi McKinley came in second, and Better Eats Vending by Layla Richardson took third place!

Illuminating the entrepreneurial mindset’s potential in the Metaverse dovetails with how NFTE learners have long used emerging technologies. This past school year, NFTE’s global pitch competitors used AR to interact with each other in the virtual world. At regional youth entrepreneurship challenges across the United States, students have also used artificial Intelligence (AI) to modify, define, or support business ideas. For example:

▪️ In the Southeast regional challenge, founders Felipe Escobar and Juan Varela pitched Bright, a pioneering platform revolutionizing mental health treatment using AI-driven chatbots, personal support, and a resource library.

▪️ Misbah Sifat of the Mid-Atlantic region created Mentor Fitness, a tech solution that taps AI models to provide personalized workout routines from real mentors and trainers.

▪️ Saket Pathak, a visionary in the West, founded InclusifyIQ, which leverages machine learning to help organizations foster more inclusive workplaces by using data-driven diversity, equity, and inclusion solutions.

President's Perspective

What differentiates NFTE in harnessing the power of entrepreneurship education in the digital age is our focus on youth empowerment. Our students are the chief ideators. They are born digital innovators who clearly see how emerging technologies can address challenges faced by vulnerable communities, challenges many of them encounter in their daily lives.

As President and CEO of NFTE, I have the privilege of traveling to meet our amazing partners, educators, and students worldwide who share a spark of wonder and innovation in discovering solutions to significant global challenges.

I also hear education and economic policymakers and scholars ponder the game-changing impact of digital technologies. Yet, NFTE has long empowered young entrepreneurs to be on the leading edge of technology. Our students are already applying artificial intelligence (AI) and other emerging technologies to solutions for health, wellness, equity, and more.

I invite you all to attend our October 3 National Competition to not only support tomorrow’s business leaders but to glimpse what our future society may look like. On September 13, when we launch our fourth annual World Series of Innovation to advance UN Global Goals, expect even more new thinking around the entrepreneurial use of AI to revolutionize transportation, environmental protection, and job skills development!

To be sure, technological innovation has the potential to widen existing inequities in education and business, but this is precisely why NFTE embraces it. By helping students from under-resourced communities navigate new technology and exposing them to an adaptable mindset early, we can close this opportunity gap and create a more equitable future.

NFTE's latest competition cycle has proven that our approach is paying off. From a pitch competition in the Metaverse and AI-based business ideas at regional competitions to a virtual reality meet and greet with young entrepreneurs from around the world – NFTE students are boldly and creatively adapting to the changing world around them!

NFTE BizCamp Empowers Students

with Visual Impairments

This summer NFTE piloted its BizCamp program at the Perkins School for the Blind in Massachusetts, thanks to the generous support of the First Republic Foundation and MetLife Foundation. The initiative aimed to inspire and equip visually impaired students with the entrepreneurial skills needed to thrive in the business world.

It culminated on August 4 with the World of Work business pitch competition. Six talented Perkins School students presented their innovative business ideas. Rachel Solomon, founder of Quick Change, emerged as the winner. Rachel, who uses a walker, knows how expensive it can be to buy a new walker every time its wheels wear down. Even when insurance covers the repair, processing and wait times can be far too long. Quick Change would provide an affordable monthly subscription service for replacement walker wheels.
