Community Garden

St. George's, Carmichael

Campaign Funding Goal: $6,000

St. George's in Carmichael needs your support! The community garden at St. George's Episcopal Church has served the community for well over 15 years. In recent years, to continue the mission of the garden and welcome refugees in the community, St. George partnered with the International Rescue Committee New Roots program to help manage and maintain the garden as a space for refugees to grow food and establish new roots.

The community garden currently serves 11 gardeners and their families, many of whom have been gardening at the site for several years. Through their exceptional gardening skills, the gardeners have helped to grow the garden into a beautiful space year after year.

The hope is to expand the garden and develop additional plots for new gardeners and make some necessary improvements to better serve and support the refugee community of gardeners.

How would appeal funds be used?

Appeal funds will help towards the cost of a new storage shed, installing a drip line irrigation system, and planting more fruit trees. The current storage structure is too small to accommodate gardeners and presents challenges with respect to storing materials and tools. Converting the garden to a drip system would not only be more cost efficient helping to save money, but also will help to reduce water usage. The current fruit trees in the garden increase the food security of the gardeners, so the hope is to add additional citrus, apple, pear and stone fruit trees.
