The dates are set for the 2023 ASA SimGenetics Training for Young Leaders and Entrepreneurs (STYLE) Conference in Oklahoma City, OK, June 9–11.
A program dedicated to developing young leaders in the ASA membership, STYLE brings together 25–45-year-olds from all over the USA. Discovery of self-leadership, a deeper understanding of the greater beef industry, learning the fundamentals and “under the hood” functions of the ASA and its governance, along with relationship-building with the cohort and others from all over America is what STYLE is all about.
Interested in this year’s program? Contact Luke Bowman, Director of SimGenetic Development today! lbowman@simmgene.com or (765) 993-6681.
"The cattle industry is just as much about connections as it is the cattle. STYLE is a relaxed yet professional environment that nurtures connections that will last a lifetime. If you're serious about being in the SimGenetics business for years to come and the future of the ASA is important to you, this is a must-attend event." - Travis Wulf, Clear Springs Cattle Co.

Try the Madigan Squeeze
It’s peak calving season for many producers across the Midwest which may mean long exhausting and occasionally frustrating hours of trying to save every calf. Iowa State University extension beef specialist Patrick Wall said a simple technique might help some newborns that struggle to nurse or appear to have little will to live. Continue reading about the "The “Madigan Squeeze" technique.

BCI Cattle Chat
Hydration and Disease Connection
Is there a connection between BRD treatment success and how well the cattle are hydrated? That is the question that Ph.D. and DVM candidate Lilli Heinen tried to answer with a research study that she recently conducted on 96 head of feedlot cattle. Tune in to hear her preliminary study results.

Understanding Calf Scours
Understanding why scours occurs is the first step in preventing the problem. Calf scours outbreaks are the result of a contaminated calving and nursing environment. This environmental contamination develops following a period of pathogen (germ) buildup, or amplification. Cows shed relatively small amounts of these bacteria and viruses into the environment often without showing any clinical symptoms. Continue reading.

Your copy should address 3 key questions: Who am I writing for? (Audience) Why should they care? (Benefit) What do I want them to do here? (Call-to-Action)
Create a great offer by adding words like "free" "personalized" "complimentary" or "customized." A sense of urgency often helps readers take an action, so think about inserting phrases like "for a limited time only" or "only 7 remaining"!

PTP Coordinator

We’ve officially put the wraps on another highly successful Major PTP Show season. At Cattlemen’s Congress,
Simmental once again had the largest show of all breeds, with 534 total entries checked in. At National Western, we saw a 152% increase in the number of checked in entries (as compared to 2022) — and continued excitement about the new facilities. The season finale in Fort Worth, while the smallest show of the season, had a direct impact on the Ring of Champions and People’s Choice outcome. Thank you to the show team — Mia Bayer, Luke Bowman, and the AJSA Trustees — and the state association hosts for a great 2022–23 show season!
With summer right around the corner, I am focusing an increased number of hours on AJSA Classic planning and preparation. The early planning details are coming together and we are looking forward to all this summer will bring.

Simbrah Registry – Breed Classification: Notice of New HerdBook Programming Logic for Purebred Simbrah Classifications.
In September of this year, the Trustees and Staff of ASA were notified of a concern regarding the Purebred Simbrah classification some animals received. Upon an in-depth review, ASA determined that the programming logic in HerdBook Services (herdbook.org) from 2013, gave an animal a Purebred Simbrah classification where another interpretation would classify these same animals as Percentage Simbrah.
The ASA Board met on Monday, November 28, 2022 and passed two resolutions which clarified the interpretation of the programming logic to be used for the Simbrah Registry – Breed Classification and provided for the implementation of the clarification.
The updated programming logic was implemented on December 15, 2022, (the “2022 Programing Logic”).

Digital Certificates - A New Feature Launched by ASA
ASA launched a new feature on Herdbook allowing members to download digital certificates for registered animals. Digital certificates are the easiest, most reliable way to obtain a copy of the registration certificate quickly. At the time of download, they include the most up-to-date EPD and pedigree information. The official record is the Herdbook Services record.
Starting September 1, 2022, ASA no longer scans, email or fax copies of printed certificates. Printing digital certificates will replace scanned, emailed, or faxed copies of certificates. If you are the current owner of record, these can be printed directly from herdbook.org without contacting the ASA office. Continue reading.
