GCEP Year in Review from Eversource

Hello,

Project Update
As 2023 draws near to a close, we wanted to take the opportunity to provide an update on The Greater Cambridge Energy Program (GCEP) and also thank you for your continued interest and support.

Since the Project's filing with the Energy Facilities Siting Board (EFSB) in March of 2022 the team has remained fully engaged with both public outreach efforts as well as continuous work to progress our Project design. Our filing continues to be thoroughly reviewed by the EFSB, and we hope to receive a decision by the Board in 2024.

GCEP proposes much-needed electric reliability enhancements by constructing a new substation in Kendall Square, along with five new duct bank systems housing eight new 115-kilovolt (“kV”) underground transmission lines. The transmission routes will span Boston (Allston/Brighton), Cambridge, and Somerville interconnecting to existing substations in these communities.

Where Are We Now?
After ten days of testimony that included our team's subject matter experts, the EFSB concluded the evidentiary hearings on November 16. Initial briefings were then submitted to the EFSB in December and review is ongoing.
The proposed underground substation in Kendall Square integrates with BXP's redevelopment plans for the area including public open space above the substation between residential and commercial buildings.
Did You Know?
That the underground substation in Kendall Square will be the first-of-its kind in the country?

A partnership spearheaded by the City of Cambridge, Cambridge Redevelopment Authority, Eversource, and BXP yielded this collaborative solution to uniquely locate the 11-story substation underground.

A "universe of routes," developed several years ago was rigorously vetted with feedback from a diverse group of stakeholders to ultimately help shape GCEP's preferred and primary route options. Somerville, Allston-Brighton, and Cambridge stakeholders have worked very closely with Eversource as partners to identify the best path forward for this critical infrastructure project.
Our Future is Clean Energy!
A strong electrical transmission system serves a critical role ensuring that electricity flows with a high degree of reliability from where power is generated to where power is needed. GCEP will ensure a more flexible electric grid to transport power from clean energy sources.
Keeping you Informed
Eversource is committed to being a good neighbor and keeping you informed of Project progress.
