April 27, 2023

reader,

If you're new here, well howdy! Welcome to my blog about Houston arts and culture, plus whatever else I wish to share from my brain. I've been publishing this since 2004 (yes, 'tis true) and I am very proud of being Houston's "cultural champion"! If you'd like to get to know me, please click here.
This week's curated KID PICKS and ADULT PICKS are below -- they are my PICKS of the best and most unique arts events coming up this weekend (and sometimes beyond!). I focus on the greater Houston area, I hope you'll join me in loving local. If you’ve watched my video about this blog, you know that it’s my goal to cover a variety of arts (dance, film, literary, music, theatre, visual art) and local culture as much as possible. This is the most diverse city in the country -- over 166 languages are spoken on a daily basis! -- so I always PICK with our multi-cultural tapestry in mind.

The popular monthly The Sunflower Market is happening again this Sunday, April 30 from 11am until 4pm at AvantGarden at 411 Westheimer Road in Montrose. The event happens on the last Sunday of each month and was co-founded by HTX4Ukraine, a local public charity on a mission to protect and save lives in Ukraine.

It's hard to find good family movies so I highly recommend you grab the gang and take them to see Perlimps this Sunday, April 30 at 1pm at the Lynn Wyatt Theater (located in the Nancy and Rich Kinder building at 5500 Main Street). Parking is easy peasy -- you have
3 lots from which to choose (or the street).

Perlimps is an animated film that is a dreamlike fantasy adventure that follows Claé and Bruô, two secret agents from enemy kingdoms sent to a world controlled by giants that is in the midst of a terrible war. They must work together to find the Perlimps, mysterious creatures who can ultimately find a way to peace. The easy-to-follow story is in Portuguese with English subtitles and is recommended for children 8 years old and up and animation fans of all ages.

Tickets are $10/each (free for students with I.D.) and can be purchased at the door or in advance here.

Perlimps is part of Latin Wave: New Films from Latin America, happening April 27-30 at The Museum of Fine Arts, Houston. Latin Wave is organized by the MFAH in association with the creative partner Fundación PROA, Buenos Aires and sponsored by Tenaris.

This free event will feature activities for all ages as well as food, performances, artist demonstrations, and more. Click on the image for more info and please RSVP here.
If your child is space-y, have them check out the digital Nasa Kids' Club -- or take them to visit Space Center Houston, a science museum that serves as the official visitor center of Johnson Space Center. They offer special events and hands-on activities for all ages and interests. Pictured is Judy Resnik's Flight Suit -- she was part of NASA’s first astronaut class to feature women. Houston's premiere multicultural choir, International Voices Houston, is presenting At the Movies: Hollywood to Bollywood in two shows only -- 3pm and 7pm -- this Saturday, April 29 at MATCH. The show will take you on a cinematic adventure, celebrating silver screen melodies from films like "The Wizard of Oz"; "O Brother, Where Art Thou?"; and "Bombay." There will also be a special guest appearance by Infused Performing Arts, local Bollywood performers. Click on the image for more info.
I went to see A.D. Players' The Play That Goes Wrong with my family -- and although we are a diverse bunch (ages and interests!) EVERYONE LAUGHED. I had heard about this international hit and was thrilled that it was coming to the beautiful George Theater; it's onstage through May 21. The show is about hilarious accident-prone thespians who battle against all odds to make it through to their final curtain call with crazy consequences! Click on the image for more info.
Mercury Chamber Orchestra is presenting Klezmer Night! from April 27-30 as part of their Neighborhood series. These short, casual concerts are held in unique spaces across Houston: this installment will travel to Midtown MATCH; Memorial Drive Presbyterian Church; The Museum of Fine Arts, Houston; and The Woodlands Dosey Doe. You can also enjoy performances via their Mercury at Home digital platform. Click on the image for more info.
