JUNE 1 - NOVEMBER 30

Hurricane season is here. Castle Group and Hammock Preserve want to ensure all residents and our assets are prepared during the 2023 Hurricane Season.

Residents are urged to develop a disaster preparedness plan before an emergency strikes. Plan in advance : where you will stay, how you will get there and what supplies you will take. The biggest points are:

  1. Make arrangements with friends or relatives living in a non evacuation area or check into a hotel located inland: or, as a last resort, use a public shelter (see evacuation pickup sites under EVACUATION).
  2. Have a transportation plan for emergencies.
  3. Tell family or neighbors where you would go to stay in case of an emergency.
  4. Don’t leave your pet(s) behind, make arrangements with a kennel or friend to care for your pet(s). There are hotels that will accept pets with prior registration.

HOME CHECKLIST

Castle Group has organized a Hurricane Preparedness Checklist for Residents which includes recommended items to have on hand for your home, if you evacuate to a shelter, and have a pet. The checklists appear as images below. To view or download a PDF file of all 3 checklists, visit https://bit.ly/hurricaneresidentchecklist. You can also visit https://www.floridadisaster.org/planprepare/hurricane-supply-checklist/ to view a checklist prepared by the Florida Division of Emergency Management.

Our ACC Guidelines are as follows for Hurricane and Storm shutters:

For any hurricane shutter system which requires a center bar, the center bar may not be permanently installed and must be removed along with the storm shutters after a Storm Event. A “Storm Event” is defined as a meteorological event in which winds in excess of 50 mph and rainfall has occurred, or is expected to occur, within 72 hours

If approved, exterior shutters may only be closed during a Storm Event or when a Storm Event is imminent and shall be reopened or removed within 72 hours. Permanent roll down shutters installed across lanai openings and which are out of public view from the street on which the house is located are exempt from this prohibition.

If you do plan to evacuate your home, the following is recommended:

  1. Take down and bring in any decorations, tables, garbage cans, plants, furniture, umbrellas, and other loose and/or unsecured structures from outdoors.
  2. Fill Prescriptions and fill vehicle gas tanks
  3. Unplug TV/computer and bring antenna and satellite dish inside.
  4. Move furniture and electronics away from windows and cover with plastic.
  5. Turn refrigerator to its coolest setting
  6. Place valuables in waterproof containers and store in high place.

Medical Needs Program

Sarasota County residents with qualifying medical needs are encouraged to apply NOW for registration as a medically dependent person (MDP). Examples of qualifying medical needs include the use of oxygen or use of medical equipment that requires electricity.

It is important to apply in advance for this program so, if qualified, you will be on the county’s registry for transportation and sheltering at a medically-dependent Evacuation Center during a disaster. Pre-registration helps when time is limited. To apply for more information visit scgov.net and search for “medical needs” or call 941-861-5000.

COUNTY EVACUATION MAP & CENTERS

First, know your evacuation zone! If you click on the button below, you can type in any address within the county. In general:

NORTH OF CLUBHOUSE - EVACUATION LEVEL C

SOUTH OF CLUBHOUSE - EVACUATION LEVEL D

CLICK HERE TO FIND YOUR EVACUATION ZONE

Below is a full listing of county evacuation centers. There are 2 Sarasota County centers within 10 miles of Hammock Preserve. These are the centers located closest to Hammock Preserve. The clubhouse is NOT an evacuation center and will not have supplies for resident's personal use.

1. Gulf Gate Elementary School, 6500 S Lockwood Ridge Road, Sarasota, 7.4 miles

2. Riverview High School, 1 Ram Way, Sarasota, 9 miles

Shelters are a refuge of last resort; a place to go if you can’t stay at home or with a relative, friend, co-worker or nearby hotel. Know if you are in an evacuation zone, and when you will evacuate (NOTE: ALL mobile home residents are required to evacuate at any level of a hurricane.) Even if you live in a non-flood zone, have a contingency plan in case you are required to evacuate for other types of emergencies.

Hurricane Evacuation Centers should be utilized when the alternative does not exist. Remember, evacuation centers are not designed for comfort. All do accept pets. Some centers are more equipped for those living with severe medical conditions. Please monitor the local media for current shelter openings and locations.

NOT ALL SHELTERS ARE OPEN FOR EVERY STORM

DO NOT LEAVE YOUR PETS AT HOME

For those who cannot otherwise be transported by family, friends or neighbors, Sarasota County will provide last-resort bus transportation for you and your pets (along with a limited amount of supplies) to and from a general population evacuation center. Transportation will be offered at designated rally points throughout the county. Rally point locations can be found on Transportation Plan page. If you can't drive to a rally point, complete the online registration form.

ADDITIONAL COUNTY SHELTER INFO

CARING FOR PETS

The survival of you and your pets could depend on your personal disaster plan. Write it down. List all the survival items you will need for your pets. Purchase supplies for at least two weeks. Travel will likely be very difficult and unsafe. Getting any additional supplies after the storm arrives maybe impossible for several days.

When you are planning for your evacuation, the location you are planning to go to should be as close to home as is safely possible. The highways will be crowded, making long distance travel difficult. Some motels and hotels will allow pets during declared evacuations if they are properly confined in a carrier or cage. Check with your preferred motel or hotel before evacuating to be sure your pet will be welcome. A limited number of private boarding facilities are available for your pets if you cannot evacuate with them. Remember to choose a boarding facility located close to your evacuation route as travel will be at best, difficult.

HOA PROCEDURES

2023 Hurricane Plan has been developed with input received from Castle Group, staff, and volunteer residents. This document outlines staff and volunteer tasks pre – and post-storm. For a link, visit https://bit.ly/hoahurricaneplan

The plan is also available on our website after logging into hammockpreserve.net, select Resident Services>Resident Documents>Emergency Resources.

ABC'S OF PREPARATION

EVACUATION:

Mandatory evacuation, if necessary, will be mandated by the local authorities. Hammock Preserve has 2 evacuation zones as shown in the map below. A link to a map is listed above.

If you will need assistance in an evacuation or need to go to a special needs/medically-dependent shelter, register with the County Emergency Management in advance by calling 941.861.5000.

GATES:

Our gate access company Virtual Guard will remotely open gates if the threat of a severe storm or hurricane is imminent. The HOA office does have the ability to alter this if needed. Should the power go out, the gates will automatically open. Virtual Guard will remotely close the gates after a storm only when it is safe to do so. This process may take several hours.

HURRICANE “WATCH”:

This is when conditions are possible in the specified area and can affect more than 100 miles of coastline. Evacuation zones are identified by the likelihood of being flooded by this rising water.

HURRICANE “WARNING”:

This is when hurricane conditions are expected in the specified area of the warning within twenty-four (24) hours of landfall. Complete all storm preparations and immediately follow local emergency management official’s advice about evacuating dangerous or low-lying locations.

INSURANCE:

Pictures and videos of the contents to your unit are crucial if you need to put in a claim to your insurance company. Also, copies of warranty booklets with model and serial numbers of your personal property should be kept with the pictures. If you are leaving your unit, it is advisable to take copies of your pictures and policies with you. In the event your local agent is not available, make sure you have a corporate headquarters office telephone number to call.

GUESTS:

Guests should be kept at a minimum when a Hurricane Warning is issued and after the storm has passed until the building is fully operational again.

POOL:

The pool furniture will be stored during hurricane “WATCH”. The pool will be chlorinated during hurricane “WATCH” and will remain out of commission for at least two (2) days after the storm.

RECOVERY AFTER THE STORM:

After the storm, roadways may be impassable making it impossible to return to your home. The landscaping crew, once they are able to return to work, will make a diligent effort to clear the roadways. Electricity and water may not be available. You should have water on hand to carry you through until services are restored.

WATER:

If you are staying in your unit, you might lose water pressure due to the County’s lack of service or loss of electric for the pump stations. Keep at least one gallon of water per person for each day. A two-week supply is prudent. Clean your tub with bleach and fill your tub for cooking, washing and to flush your toilets.

STAFF:

The Castle Group property manager will only be available for short period once a hurricane “WATCH” is issued. When the building is in hurricane “WARNING”, all staff persons will be on their way home. Key personnel will stay on a voluntary basis only and as time permits them to reach their homes safely. Key personnel may stay on a voluntary basis.
