Understanding the Need for a Benefits-Based Accountability in Schools
The idea that the formal accountability function in schools is broken comes as a surprise to no one, and yet for nearly three decades answering the question of what might work has proved elusive. The reasons for this are so layered and complex that it can make a person dizzy just thinking about the problem, let alone imagining a solution.
John Tanner spent more than a decade doing both, and then years more working to determine what the answers might mean for public education. The results are surprisingly easy to understand once we learn to see things a bit differently than we’ve been trained to do.
Schools and districts across the country are now working with John and his bravEd team to transform the accountability function in schools into something designed to serve students, their families, and their communities, which is a far cry from what we have now. They do this absent a policy change, as one of the most surprising elements of the work is that real accountability and what passes for accountability are not on the same planet—one can and must be done regardless of the other.
