A new law recently signed by Governor Newsom will prohibit the use of potable (drinkable) water to irrigate nonfunctional turf on commercial, industrial, and institutional properties starting in January 2027. Nonfunctional turf refers to grass that serves no practical or recreational purpose beyond aesthetics.
Business leaders who adopt sustainable landscaping practices are showcasing their commitment to a greener, more eco-conscious future. In three short years, businesses and schools with nonfunctional turf will be required to ditch their thirsty grass and replace it with sustainable landscaping. Monte Vista Water District (MVWD) recognizes that landscape transformation projects take planning, money, and time to complete. MVWD can provide resources and incentives to ease the burden for your business to transform its landscape.
MVWD offers a Turf Removal Rebate starting at $2 per square foot to help offset the costs of converting nonfunctional turf into more sustainable and water-efficient landscapes (up to 50,000 square feet). The Waterwise Community Center in Montclair provides free design resources to empower businesses to tackle landscape transformation projects, ensuring that the result is both aesthetically pleasing and water-efficient.
Are you ready to move toward sustainable landscaping? Contact MVWD at (909) 267-2130 or to explore available programs and resources that can assist you in making the transition. Together, we can shift from water-guzzling to sustainable landscapes, conserve our water resources, and contribute to a more environmentally responsible future.
