2023 YEAR END SUMMARY
As another year has come to an end, we’d like to do a big shout-out to those volunteers and supporters that have stood by the organization in years past, and in 2023. We endure the low times but enjoy the high points when we can. One such high point was the Rescue Showcase at the Alaskan Malamute Club of America’s (AMCA) National Showcase this past October. National recognition of our efforts on behalf of this breed is reason for us all to celebrate. From rescuing, rehabilitating when needed, to finding forever homes for this breed we’re so smitten by—that was a community effort by all of us. We made it possible for those rescued Malamutes to be highlighted in the show ring.

Also, at the AMCA show, The Alaskan Malamute Assistance League national organization annually bestows the esteemed Christenson Award to individuals who consistently go above and beyond their duties, often working tirelessly behind the scenes. This year, the exceptional Rickie Anderson rightfully received this accolade, a testament not only to her volunteerism but also to the pride and admiration felt by the organization for her remarkable accomplishments.
Acknowledging rescue as a 24/7/365 commitment, we’d like to emphasize WAMAL’s entirely volunteer-driven work. Volunteers, while juggling full-time jobs and managing their own households and pets, shoulder every responsibility — from strategic planning and bill payments to addressing the continual stream of pleas for assistance, assessing homes and incoming dogs, tending to our Malley Valley kennel and walking and socializing our pups. To ALL volunteers, and to those who support WAMAL financially and in other ways, we thank you for your unwavering dedication to our four-legged “guests” awaiting their forever homes. It might not seem like much, but setting up a recurring donation of even $5 or $10 per month makes a big difference for our rescues. We appreciate all donations!

As the new year approaches, we anticipate the arrival of new faces while bidding farewell to long-time board members. To the new faces: Welcome! We’re glad to have you join the “pack.” To those departing, WAMAL sends a heartfelt thank you for the time and effort you have devoted to our continued success.

On behalf of the Board of Directors, we send warm wishes for a joyous New Year to you, your human family, and your furry companions.

JOIN OUR TEAM AS A FOSTER COORDINATOR AND MAKE A DIFFERENCE!
Are you passionate about rescue efforts and ready to play a crucial role in finding loving foster homes for our Malamutes? We're thrilled to announce a fantastic opportunity to join our Foster Coordination (FC) team! As a valued member of the Foster Team, you will be instrumental in recommending matches between our rescue dogs and approved fosters. This role involves reaching out to these fosters, arranging meet and greets, and ensuring that our pups receive the individual attention in order to thrive. We currently have two dedicated Foster Coordinators ready to provide training, and we're on the lookout for one or two more members to share the workload and expand our impact.

Why is this role essential?
Placement in Foster Homes: The FC is pivotal in placing rescued Malamutes into foster homes, providing them with individual attention outside of the kennel environment.
Determining Ideal Homes: Fostering helps us get a better idea of each dog's needs, contributing to the identification of their "ideal" forever home.
More Room for Rescues: Once a kenneled dog is placed in a foster home, it opens up space a kennel space to offer to a rescue pup in need.

What does the Foster Coordinator do?
  • Provide input at Adoption Team meetings for potential Malamute matches with approved fosters.
  • Stay updated on kenneled and incoming dogs, as well as approved fosters.
  • Contact approved fosters with potential matches and arrange meetings.

  • Attention to detail and effective data management.
  • Analytical skills to evaluate dogs and foster information for safe and appropriate matches.
  • Organizational skills with independent follow-through.
  • 2-4 hours per week commitment (including a ½ to 1 hour conference call on Wednesday evenings, on a rotating basis).
  • Strong communication skills, both verbal and written.
  • Good interpersonal skills to engage with fosters.
  • A sense of humor.

ADOPTABLE DOG SHOWCASE
Hello everyone - handsome Hercules here, hoping that my future furever family is reading this right now so they can find me!

I'm probably around 4 years old now and unfortunately I didn't get the best start in life. That has understandably left me with some anxiety, so I'm really hoping for an experienced home with lots of patience, kindness, and understanding. That will help me to overcome my fears, learn my boundaries, and blossom into the very best floof that I can be!

My worst fear right now is being left all alone, so I'd love a family where someone is retired or is working from home. I've met small kids before and I got a little too excited and jumpy, so older kids or an adult-only home might be best. I've lived with other dogs and have done OK with them, but I prefer not to share my humans so if you have other dogs you'll want to manage us carefully.

I promise that if you put in the work to earn my trust and guide me, I could become the very best companion you'll ever have. Please apply to adopt me or foster me today!
Oh hey there! My name is Nala. I was out on my own for a while looking for a new home. As it turns out, stray life wasn't all that great. So now I've turned to WAMAL for help finding the right family!

So far it's crystal clear that I *love* people! I'm not sure yet if I like other dogs as much...I might be OK with a friendly male dog with careful introductions, but I'd be just fine as your one and only! Everyone who has met me thinks I'm a total sweetheart. And I come with an adorable range of both vocal and facial expressions!

I'm probably 3 or 4 years old now. It's not known how long I had to fend for myself, but at some point I ended up eating a rock. I'm all recovered from the surgery to remove it but I'll need you to watch that I don't eat other things I shouldn't! With reliable meals and good nutrition hopefully that isn't something I'll repeat. I do still have a bit of a sensitive tummy though so please no dairy treats for me!

I'm really excited to find my furever home and I have sooooo much love to give. Won't you consider applying to adopt me or foster me?
