A Construction Season Unlike Any Other

I'm sure BRAD doesn't have to tell you about how much construction is currently in and around Novi right now.

While we know and understand it can be difficult to get around Novi due to construction projects from almost every agency we think of, please know we will relay road work information and encourage our partners to complete work as safely and efficiently as possible.

The silver lining is this short-term pain will lead to long-term gain and better roads ahead.

MDOT PROJECTS

I-96 Freeway Flex Route

EB I-96 from Wixom to I-275 has two lanes open through late fall. EB I-96 from Kent Lake to Wixom will have two lanes open through mid-August.

Wixom to EB I-96, Beck to EB I-96, EB I-96 to Beck, NB and SB Novi to EB I-96 and WB M-5 to WB I-96 ramps will remain closed through mid-August.

Rebuilding Michigan I-696 Project

The Michigan Department of Transportation has shifted all EB and WB traffic to the westbound side, where two lanes will remain open in both directions through the late fall.

NB Telegraph to EB I-696; EB I-696 to American Drive; SB Orchard Lake to EB I-696; NB Orchard Lake to WB I-696; and WB M-5 to WB I-96 ramps will also remain closed until the late fall.

RCOC PROJECTS

10 Mile Widening and Rehabilitation

The Road Commission of Oakland County began the final two stages this week to reconstruct and widen 10 Mile Road between Meadowbrook and Haggerty Roads. As a result, 10 Mile Road will be one-way eastbound only traffic for the duration of the project -- mid-August, which is months ahead of what was anticipated!

While we at the City and many residents may have liked two-way traffic for another few weeks, we can all agree the earlier this project is completed, the better.

As a reminder, access to businesses along 10 Mile will be maintained throughout the project. Be sure to stop by and show your support! To see the easiest way to get to businesses on 10 Mile from Haggerty during construction, please use these alternate routes to support them.

Novi Road Rehabilitation

Novi Road is currently closed between Nine Mile and 10 Mile Road as the Road Commission of Oakland County replaces large culverts under Novi Road. RCOC anticipates being finished with this work by the end of the month.

After this work is finished, RCOC's contractor will begin the road rehabilitation work and shift traffic on Novi Road between Nine Mile and 10 Mile Road to southbound-only traffic until this fall.

2023 Simple Asphalt Resurfacing of 8 Mile Road

The Road Commission of Oakland County has begun roadwork on Eight Mile Road between Napier and Taft as part of their Preservation Overlay Program. There are no detours necessary for this work. Traffic flow during construction will be under flag control.

As a reminder, Eight Mile Road between Center Street and Haggerty Road is under the jurisdiction of the Wayne County Road Division. After repeated attempts by the Mayor and Council, City administration and a County Commissioner, Wayne County responded to our inquiries, stating that there is currently no scheduled project on Eight Mile Road from Meadowbrook to Novi Road except the Bridge deck replacement.

Please know the City will continue to advocate for repairs on behalf of our Novi. If you would like to reach out and share your thoughts, you can do so here.

GLWA PROJECTS

54-Inch Water Transmission Main Loop (13 Mile and Meadowbrook Roads)

GLWA has strung out the new 54-inch pipe along 13 Mile from M-5 to Meadowbrook Road as part of this project. The contractor has mobilized to 13 Mile Road and M-5 to begin digging the valve vault. For the duration of the project, 13 Mile will have two-way traffic without a left turn lane except for a three-day closure at 13 Mile and M-5 in mid-June. This portion of the project is expected to be completed in late summer.

The Great Lakes Water Authority's contractor has completed installing micro-piles on Meadowbrook Road and has begun installing the new sanitary sewer. GLWA has told the City they are still on track complete construction and fully open Meadowbrook Road between 12 and 13 Mile Road this fall.
