Wrap-up on the 2023 MRW Sock Hop

It was a great night for MRW, as more than 120 people attended this annual fundraiser and raised nearly $5,000 for the organization.

In addition to the dancing, food and camaraderie, our crowd enjoyed 12 lip-sync acts. Congratulations to all the performers, and grateful thanks to Ron and Michelle Jackson for making Freedom Hall available, and to all those who volunteered to organize the event, set up the Freedom Hall and contribute food items. Below are some highlights of the acts:

Winners of the lip-syncing contest were Diane Ingold and Kim Tackett, performing a hilarious "YMCA" by The Village People.

Kathy Beddow, Laura Morgan and Pauline Bruno came in second with “Be My Baby” by the Ronettes.

Mia and Steve Bibey took third place with "You're the One That I Want" from Grease.

John and Maureen Zumwalt ham it up in "Happy Together" by The Turtles

Philip Holmes and his kids in "Yackety Yack, Don't Talk Back" by The Coasters.

Betsy Miller, Shannon Davis, Pauline Bruno, Maureen Zumwalt, Teresa Beavers and Charli Thyne starred in their rendition of "Stop! In the Name of Love" by The Supremes.

Miriam and Willy Chu sang "I Got CHU, Babe" by Sonny & Cher. A special "shout-out" to Miriam, makeup artist to the stars, who helped the contestants backstage with their costumes and makeup.

And finally, we want to note that MRW is very important to political candidates. The following public figures attended and had a great time:

  • Congressman Richard Hudson
  • Former Congressman and current candidate for Governor Mark Walker
  • Attorney General candidate Tom Murry
  • Lt. Governor candidate Allen Mashburn
  • District Court Judge Chris McLean, candidate for Court of Appeals
  • State Auditor candidate Anthony Street
