Picture Day!

There's no crazy laser backgrounds like there were on school picture day, but this weekend you'll want to look your best for team and league photos!

We'll be pausing briefly before the 11:00am games to take a league photo. Please be sure you're at the fields in time for the photo!

Teams can ask our league photographer, Paul Martin, to take their team photo at any point during this weekend's games, once your entire team is together.

Rules Spotlight - Roughing the Passer

This week we shine a spotlight on an important player safety issue - roughing the passer. In our PVDGFFL family, we never want to see someone get hurt, so we have safeguards and deterrents - including some that go beyond the NGFLL rulebook - that limit contact and decrease the chances of injury.

Rushers have one of the hardest jobs on the field - they play a position that demands speed, intelligence, and toughness. It's perhaps the most physical position on the field. It's important that our rushers understand the boundaries of what they can and cannot do while rushing. Quarterbacks are in an incredibly vulnerable position because they can't always see a rusher running at them and they have no way to protect themselves or brace for contact.

That's why rushers are not allowed to hit the quarterback under any circumstances. A rusher may ONLY reach for the quarterback's flags - they cannot go for the ball, the quarterback's arm, or hit the quarterback in any way. Although you can put your arms up to block a quarterback's view while you're engaged with a lineman at the line of scrimmage, your arms must come down when you're within 3-4 feet of the quarterback - within that 3-4 foot range you can only reach for the quarterback's flags.

Imagine the quarterback has a protective halo around them, similar to the circle that you might see around a quarterback in a video game. You cannot have your arms up within this halo and you cannot touch the quarterback other than to reach for their flags.

Hitting the quarterback, going for anything other than the quarterback's flags, or rushing with your arms up within the 'halo' will result in a roughing the passer penalty. Two roughing the passer penalties in a game will result in an ejection and automatic one-game suspension. After the first roughing the passer penalty, the referee will explain to the player and their captains exactly what the player did wrong and will notify them that a second infraction will result in ejection.

This is an important player safety issue, and we thank you for helping keep one another safe. All of these instructions were clarified last weekend with the captains and referees - please feel free to speak to your captains, the officials, or a Board member if you have any questions.

Helmets & Heels

Live your best drag queen/king fantasy at our 2023 Helmets & Heels Show.

Helmets & Heels is our biggest fundraiser of the year, with proceeds going to our Gay Bowl tournament teams. This year’s event will take place on Saturday, September 16th at The Dark Lady in Providence.

We're looking for league members who want to strut their stuff as Drag Kings or Drag Queens. Never done drag before? Not to worry! You'll be teamed up with a Drag Parent - a local Providence drag icon who will help mold you into a fierce performer.

Your Drag Parent will help with your makeup and outfit, and work with you to select a fun drag name and lip sync number. You'll “werk” the main stage at Dark Lady with adoring fans screaming your name and showering you with cash, all to help raise money for our 2023 Gay Bowl travel teams.

If drag isn't your thing, there are other ways to participate!

If interested in signing up or learning more, please reach out to Anthony DeRose via email at anthony@pvdgffl.org.

Pet Policy at the Fields

We love our four-legged PVDGFFL friends and want to make sure they (and our players) stay safe on game day. Please make sure that if you do bring your pet to the fields, you abide by the following rules:

  • You cannot leave your pet unattended. You or a pet-sitter must be watching your pet at all times.
  • All pets must be on a leash or in a carrier at all times.
  • Please do not "stake" your pet to the ground - it's dangerous for them and for other pets/participants.
  • You must clean up after your pet.
  • You are responsible for your pet, their behavior, and any incidents that may occur while they're at the fields.
  • If your pet nips, please consider whether our games are the right environment for them.

Health & Safety Weekly Update

It’s hard to believe we are already at the last week of regular spring season play!

Some important notes regarding folks who are wearing health and safety arm bands. Currently, some folks have orange reflective arm bands to signify they are available to provide CPR in case of a cardiac arrest. Green reflective arm bands will start to be provided this coming week which will identify folks who can provide first aid as well as respond with CPR. These are the folks to look out for when needing assistance with grabbing items from the first aid kit such as ice packs, band aids, etc.

Weekly Health Highlight: Dynamic stretching and warm ups

Improving range of motion and flexibility, decreasing injury risk, and improving blood flow to muscles are just some of the ways stretching can help to prep your body for game play. Arriving to the fields plenty of time before the start of your first game will allow you some time to warm up. Read more to understand the importance of stretching before playing sports.

Check out this article from NFL FLAG, official flag football program of the NFL, on some basic dynamic warm up drills including high knees and scoop, lunges, karaoke butt kicks, *and more* along with some information on why these particular movements are beneficial for flag football!

Take care and stay safe out there! Check out our Health & Safety section of our website for more helpful information.

Sponsor Spotlight

This week's Sponsor Spotlight shines on the Grid Iron Ale House & Grille. The Grid Iron at 1599 Post Rd. in Warwick, RI had served as the official post-game hangout and watering hole for the Providence Gay Flag Football League since 2019.

The Grid Iron offers great pizza and pub food that hits the spot after a long day on the fields, especially the Mac N' Cheese Bites. Not only do they have some great food, but you can also enjoy one of their 36 beers on tap. Plus, you can sit and enjoy watching your favorite teams on one of their 14 HD TV screens. They also have live entertainment on Friday and Saturdays and karaoke on Thursdays.

We can't thank Arthur Tattrie and his staff enough for always being so accommodating every Saturday during our seasons, providing amazing service and for their continued support of the PVDGFFL.
