Dearest Friends,

It's that time of year when Santa appears everywhere you look and every mind turns to giving.

In this year's final eNewsletter we have a gift for you - treks for less! A gift idea for your loved ones - gift vouchers! And it would mean so much if you would consider a year-end gift of support for Shumla. We've got less than $20,000 to raise.

All this giving puts us in a very merry mood. We can't wait to share 2023 - Shumla's 25th Anniversary year - with you!

We have so much to be grateful for and YOU are on that list!

Happy Holidays to you and yours from all of us at Shumla!

Send Shumla a Year-End Gift

There’s no doubt about it. Shumla Treks are a hit!

Our rock art tour program, started in May of 2021, has become a must-have experience for those interested in indigenous art of the Americas and the spectacular west Texas landscape.

2023 will be Shumla’s 25th Anniversary year and we have a special surprise. Incoming Shumla Board President, Mike Webb, has pledged a gift of $10,000 to cover some of the staffing and management costs of the 2023 treks program. This means, you, the trekker, can Trek for less!

In 2023, a full day trek will cost $120 per person (down from $160) and a half day trek will cost $60 (down from $80).

As always, your trek will be led by a Shumla Archaeologist and be informed by Shumla’s latest research and discoveries. You can visit sites inaccessible to the public and see sacred places that hold as much power today as they did when they were painted thousands of years ago. Come trek with us!

Thank you, Mike, for supporting a program that brings people from across the globe to see the treasured ancient murals of Texas. Our hope is that even more people will see for themselves why preserving this library is of urgent importance.

Looking for the perfect gift? Look no further!

Shumla Treks is now offering Gift Vouchers for $60 and $120 that can be applied to 2023 Shumla Half-Day or Full-Day Treks.

When you purchase you will receive an email with a printable and/or emailable gift voucher (example below) to give or send to your loved one. They can select from any of the 20 Shumla Treks on our 2023 schedule for a inspiring experience they will thank you for.

We have new radiocarbon dates from Halo Shelter!

Shumla's Science Director, Dr. Karen Steelman, will be sharing new data from The Hearthstone Project. Last year, the team conducted fieldwork to determine paint layer stratigraphy for Halo Shelter near the Devils River. Using microscopy, we can chart out the order that the paint was applied to the rock shelter wall. Based on that information, Steelman returned to conduct radiocarbon dating of the pictographs. Results from thirteen pictographs at the site are remarkably consistent, further confirming that the mural was a planned composition. We want to share these new and exciting results with you!
