In 2023 our Sustainability Team focused on implementing standards and tools to support our goal of improving sustainability and wellness outcomes for all of our projects. A major effort included the development of a company-wide process for enhancing sustainability to be launched at the start of 2024. Additionally, the team developed planning and technical tools in response to regulatory changes impacting sustainability, particularly in states like Massachusetts. Our internal education efforts related to sustainability were highlighted by staff participation at the Greenbuild and NESEA conference this year and staff pursuits of Passive House & Living Futures accreditation. Our firm continues making positive strides in our Architecture 2030 Commitment, with many of our projects tracking notable improvements in EUI and reduced reliance on fossil fuels.

Our Design, Culture, and Wellness teams organized events throughout the year, including Design walking tours of Boston, Providence, and Brooklyn, Wellness Wednesdays outdoor activities, Movember contest/fundraiser, dress as a character from your favorite holiday movie, and volunteer days with LEVO International hydroponic urban farming. We ended the year with our team holiday party at Urban Lodge which included a Murder Mystery Dinner, and our last in-office happy hour, a “Cozy Cabin Cookie Swap”.

Justice Equity Diversity Inclusion + Belonging

Our JEDI+B team, which is organized into three areas, Culture, Profession, and Design, was very busy this year!

The Profession team was involved in various K-12 and Higher Ed events and activities. This included participating in the Hip Hop Architecture Camp at the University of Hartford, contributing to Construction Inclusion Week in New Haven, and taking part in Career Day at Enfield High School. We welcomed NOMAS and AIAS student groups from the University of Hartford for a presentation and office tour, and we provided a job shadow experience for a high school student from Coventry. Our team visited AI Prince Technical High School for a presentation and Q&A session, and we hosted a group of over 20 students from Junior Achievement of Southwest New England, offering them a presentation, office tour, and engaging group activity.

Our Culture team helped plan the summer company picnic which began with a team-building workshop that focused on co-creating and building a climate of belonging at Amenta Emma. The team also partnered with the Wellness Committee for a Black Heroes Trail walk through Hartford.

The Design team created a JEDI+B Design Manual - a comprehensive guide for designers at Amenta Emma that will serve as a roadmap to integrate principles of Justice, Equity Diversity, Inclusion, and Belonging at different stages of our design process, fostering socially conscious and inclusive needs of our communities.

Amenta Emma was recognized with an AIA Connecticut JEDI Award, being one of the five chosen winners out of 32 firms that took part in the AIA Connecticut 2023 JEDI Challenge. This recognition is given to firms who strive to provide equitable, diverse and inclusive environments within their firms and their communities.
