Merry Christmas, Happy Holidays and love from my fam to yours! Yep you're right, my kids look just like me! 🀣 🀣

For real story: When we all saw that pic my kids were makin' fun of me – we were all in the living room – and I said, "Well I must have been pretty good looking at one point!" Dead silent. Kids look at my wife, look at me, look at my wife – she didn't say a word. That a bad sign?? πŸ˜… 🀣

Not supposed to work next week so don't expect a Blaster...but I might do one anyhow because bass fishin' rocks man! Speakin' o' that, this issue partly brought to you by the ol' tune "Hold On To 18" by the band Black 'N Blue – which I'm pretty sure was not named after a jig color. Tune still rocks!

For all you Canadian hard-rockin' peeps, shoutin' out the ol' tune "Stand Tall" by Killer Dwarfs. Still rocks! Makes me wanna pick up the ol' 'lectric fiddle....

Thanks for readin' and watchin', much appreciated!

5 things to keep an eye out for next year πŸ‘€

Here you go – just some musin's:

1. Is FFS starting to spook fish/some fish?

Been hearing a few more reports about forward-facing sonar spooking fish – remember that crappie and other fishermen are using it now too. So:

Will those "easy fish" naive to FFS start to disappear – kinda like those easy A-rig fish?

Will FFS "run off" fish from certain areas? Maybe under some conditions? Or not?

Will those "inbetween" fish (between structure/cover spots) become less easy to catch with FFS?

Will this tech that's made fish easier to catch eventually make them – or some of them – HARDER to catch? πŸ€”

Could it make some fish angry??

😁 Okay seriously: How many transducers is too many for fish?

Is John Cox's "no transducers" approach smarter in the long run? Or just as effective anyhow?

Who knows – we'll have a dang good time findin' out peeps!

2. New fishin' techniques and strategies?

Will lots of FFS use create new ways of fishing and new tournament strategies even for guys who don't have it or use it much? I've been saying yes and I'm stickin' with it!

3. What's coming from the Borg?

What will the electronics companies come out with next year? I mean, I doubt they can go a year without rolling out something new because the competition is so fierce....

Sounds like Lowrance has a better transducer coming, heard rumors about one of the troller companies coming out with something...and will the Power-Pole troller ever happen at this point??

Interesting tidbit: On the salty side you can buy aftermarket transducers, which could be really cool for bassin'.

4. More BPT power?

Will we see a lot more jigs and other power baits on MLF's Bass Pro Tour? I kinda hope so but also hope they don't get too far from how it's been over there.

I was readin' a Mark Menendez post on Bassmaster.com, and he said something that jumped out:

> ...the bigger fish that make the most difference in tournaments tend to get on isolated objects or in heavy cover.

Yes they do! So...how have the flippin experts been doing on the BPT? Will that pendulum swing back now? I think so – not a rocket science conclusion and I'm sure you see it. Btw Mark also said:

> Ultimately, I think flipping is the only technique that gives us the chance to be at 100% conversion on opportunities.

5. Hammer time?

Will Bobby Lane, Ish Monroe and other top sticks plow through the Opens and get back onto the Elites? Tough field but I'm votin' yes!

One more thing to look out for next year: LARRY NIXON!!!

β€Š

Thinkin's on stuff to help fishing

Just some thoughts, worth exactly 2c. Love to hear any you might have.

1. No daylight savings!

Get rid of daylight savings – at best it's 1 less hour of potential fishing time each day for half a year (ish), and at worst folks can't even go because it gets dark too dang fast!

The fishing industry should be lobbying for this more than anything. πŸ‘€

2. No more sportsmen/women $$$ theft!

Stop state DNRs from having to handle stuff like endangered species and aquatic nuisance species using our money (licenses and excise taxes). Not cool and possibly not legal? (I don't know.)

The fact that they have to do that is known and used as a hammer (lawfare) by the bad guys to spend our money on their stuff. They need to put their money into the outdoors, not just lawsuits!

And wow much is the shipping industry paying (responsible for zebra mussels)? How much is the aquaculture industry paying (Asian carp)? How about the aquarium industry (all kinds of fish and aquatic veggies)?

3. Help or get mad at some state DNRs

Get state DNRs that are waaaaay behind the curve and/or are just not real good at doing what they're supposed to do (eg, NJ) to be better – meaning actually serving their customers.

Maybe the American Sportfishing Assn (recreational fishing lobbying group in DC) could spend less time focusing on the feds and more time doing this, if that fits with their mission. It's like: If you wanted more kids playing football, would you spend time talking to the NFL or would you be working at the youth/high school level? Or something like that....

4. Have electronics "classes" in tourneys

Amateur tournament trails I think need to have different electronics "classes" – at least 2: forward-facing sonar guys, and non-FFS guys.

There's nothing wrong with FFS, but not everyone can afford $10K of electronics/batteries and not everyone wants to have to fish that way – and we need our tournament guys to still fish and kids from modest means to be able to compete.

5. Lower tournament entry fees!

In my 2c that should always be the goal, especially at the top. The top pros should spend less than everyone else and make more than everyone else, whether they're rookies or been at it 30 years. I've been saying that for 20 years and KNOW it can be done so I don't wanna hear any excuses!

Told Jar Jar what it cost to fish as a pro and he was like:

Okay I know Jar Jar ain't the sharpest hook in the box but I think he got it this time! πŸ˜‚

And...?

Pretty sure I have one more way to get peeps – including tourney peeps – fishing and have a new kinda fun doing it. Been nursing an app idea for years, think it'll kick tail. If anyone wants to build it, lmk. Won't be cheap...which is why I haven't done it myself!

Top 10 TOURNAMENT baits of all time: #6 – ChatterBait/ JackHammer

Why

Take a hot new bait, add in some big tour wins in a pretty short amount of time, then have some patent protection as well as continuing design improvements, and that right there is a recipe for bass bait success.

History

25 years of bait tinkering 🀯 by SC's Ronny Davis (Rad Lures) resulted in a new bait style they called the ChatterBait. The bait went kinda unnoticed til Bryan Thrift won the Southeast Division Stren Series event at Lake Okeechobee on it in January 2006. Right after that was the Okeechobee FLW and some of the top finishers used it – and that was all she wrote.

Once the cat was out of the bag, orders flooded in which overwhelmed the Davises in-home production. They worked out an agreement with SC company Z-Man to make 'em, and Z-Man ended up owning and developing it into the amazing line of ChatterBaits they have now.

On Tour

Literally everyone jumped on the ChatterBait train after 2006 or shortly thereafter. But around 2016, Brett Hite and Morizo Shimizu worked with Evergreen International to develop the JackHammer, a vibrating jig that was only available in Japan. In 2017 it was released to the US market with Z-Man – they weren't sure that bass-heads would buy an $18 bladed jig but we did!

High finishes and wins with the bait by guys like Brett, Chris Johnston, Brent Ehrler and Edwin Evers – and many more since – helped make this bait a staple for bass fisherman all over the country.

You can read about the ChatterBait's history here and check out Mark Jeffreys/BTL's real good "20Ft Deep" vid on it on YT.

Runner up: Phenix Vibrating Jig?

The original and other ChatterBaits really are the runners up, but the Phenix was the deal for a little bit because of quality components and especially because of back to back Brett Hite wins in 2008 at Toho/the Kissimmee Chain and the Cali Delta. In 2009 Rusty Salewske won an FLW Series at the Cali Delta and one of his baits was the Phenix.

It started to get popular and then as Z-Man was protecting its ChatterBait patent(s), in 2011 Phenix agreed to stop selling their bladed jig – tho they now have one on TW that no doubt is being produced through a deal with Z-Man. Gotta give it to Z-Man on the patent protection – even if we didn't know how crazy great and popular these bladed jigs would be, they did!

Honorable mentions – Swim-jigs

Okay not bladed jigs, but they are swimmin' jigs and for sure they have been more of a tournament staple over the past several years. Here's a couple that have popped up in big-time tournaments:

1. Dirty Jigs Swim Jig – A high-quality product that has had national tournament success.

2. 4x4 Swim Jig – Put a quality jig in the hands of guys like Randall Tharp, Brandon McMillan and Bobby Lane, then let 'em eat! Word got around quick....

Shout-out to Tom Monsoor, Mr. Swim Jig, who has won major tourneys on it for decades. Dude's a swim-jiggin' stud!

News

1. Buddy Gross snaps his hair jigs...

...so they'll fall on a slack line and look more natural. Hits the bottom, 3-4 quick pumps of the reel, then snaps it up and let's it fall with some slack.

2. Elite rookie Cole Sands' jersey for St Jude.

Also Opens angler Tristan McCormick's.

3. AR State-Mountain Home now has an official bass team.

Was a club, now sanctioned by the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA). I bet they'll be good!

4. AR DNR "refreshed" 128 mid-lake habitat sites.

Bass pro Shops gave some of the $$, coordinates will be published next year.

5. CA: Clear Lake is in a slump?

> I cannot remember a tournament that produced worse results than the American Bass event held a week ago. A grand total of 11 fish were caught and the winning team had only 4 bass. 11 fishermen did not catch a single fish.

6. CA: Oroville water level up, Bidwell Canyon ramp open.

7. NV: Boater owners rallied on Vegas strip about Mead ramp closures.

> Around 30 boats and jet skis were pulled by car down the Las Vegas Strip in an effort to bring awareness to potential changes the National Park Service is eyeing to manage lowering water levels.

8. WI: Wake boat concerns rising.

9. WV: New ramp open at St Albans on the Kanawha River.

After a $1 mil reno.

10. NY: New Grindstone ramp project announced.

On the St Lawrence to make it more useable during low water, sounds like. Ramp is in Clayton.

11. Semi-interesting post about boat trends...

Few quick deals from it:

> 'Lectric outboards: He expects the year to bring more announcements about new products and one-off projects, but with no larger-scale production for another 3-5 years.

> ...[the marine trade assn] working to ensure that the industry's transition to newer technologies will be market-driven, not government-imposed. "We're trying to prevent somebody from coming in and saying, 'Let's decarbonize the marine industry without really understanding what that means." [Good!]

> ...people who may have, in previous years, bought an end-of-season model for $25,000 or less may be waiting until spring to see where things stand. "It's more the [economic] uncertainty that's hitting people the most."

12. John Loughlin is Mustad's new global OEM manager.

Was the North America OEM manager.

13. MD: Conowingo Dam might release less sediment?

On the Susquehanna River. Might happen as the result of a lawsuit from Earthjustice – you can tell what kind of group it is from its name – on behalf of itself and other environmental groups. but maybe this is a good one.

14. Reminder that TW's 12 Days of Savin's is still on!

On BassBlaster.rocks right now...

Tip of the Day

Brandon Palaniuk will fish flatsides all winter.

> "It's not black and white in terms of a specific water temperature when they work. Each fall there's a window when the water is somewhere in the 50s when jerkbaits really start to work well, and that's when I also start thinking of flat-sided crankbaits. You can...do it all winter long in many regions of the country."

> ...rock transitions are areas that always seem to produce for him. "It could be a bluff wall that turns into chunk rock or chunk rock to pea gravel. Those are always obvious places for me to start and it's because a lot of times those are places where the steepness of the bank changes. It gives the fish deep water and a shallower shelf that they can use to ambush baitfish."

> Palaniuk prefers to fish down a bank with his boat positioned parallel to the bank and make 45 degree angle casts toward the bank. "This keeps your bait in the strike zone much longer."

> ...a Rapala Shad Rap, Berkley Frittside or homemade balsa bait..."These are light baits and casting them effectively is a big part of the equation. I'll always use a casting rod if I can get away with it, but there are times when you have to switch to spinning gear...."

> His rods of choice are the [7' MH Mod] Alpha Angler Rebound...and a 7' 2" M spinning rod that Alpha Angler designed for spybaits...a 6.3:1 Daiwa Zillion SV and...a Daiwa Exist.....

> Seaguar Tatsu fluorocarbon is his preferred line for both setups, anywhere from 8- to 12-lb.... "What makes Tatsu so good...is the diameter-to-strength ratio. Even when you are cranking around rocks, you still have durability because it's a double-structure fluorocarbon – so it's very strong but also soft enough to give you great casting distance.

> "The thinner diameter also helps give these baits a more natural action because there's less resistance in the water."

I know that's not a flatside but it IS Brandon! 😁 Shout out to his SIMMS rain gear – was great and key for us on last week's bassin' adventures. Looks like the SIMMS Challenger Jacket and Challenger Bibs are on ridonkulous sale right now at the TW! 🀯

Quote of the Day

"Make them come and get it."

- Jason Christie talkin' in the newest YUM FF Sonar vid about keeping the bait above the fish. He says that water viz will dictate how far to keep it above them and NOT to drop it to 'em πŸ‘€ – make them go get it. Interesting....
